Jets gave their 2025 draft pick the perfect mentor in Minkah Fitzpatrick

The New York Jets' 2025 draft class wasn't particularly a good one for general manager Darren Mougey. Sure, his first two picks, Armand Membou and Mason Taylor, look promising, but everyone taken afterwards didn't show much promise throughout their rookie seasons.

Among the likes of Arian Smith, Kiko Mauigoa, and Tyler Baron, only one Day 3 selection has a clear path to a starting job in 2026, and that's fourth-round pick Malachi Moore.

The former Alabama standout saw plenty of action last season for a banged-up Jets secondary. He appeared in all 17 games and started 14 of them. It wasn't necessarily good tape, as he recorded a Pro Football Focus grade of 58.9, ranked 72nd of 98 qualified players.

He'll need to prove he's taken steps forward in his development this summer in order to earn that starting gig, but he has arguably the best mentor he could ask for in a fellow former Crimson Tide defensive back.

Malachi Moore reveals how Minkah Fitzpatrick has helped him during New York Jets training camp

Minkah Fitzpatrick has surely taken Moore under his wing this offseason. The young defensive back needs guidance, and who better to teach him than a five-time Pro Bowler?

After practice on Saturday, Moore was asked what exactly Fitzpatrick has been helping him with throughout the offseason, and revealed the biggest tip he's gotten from the veteran.

"Yeah, just reading the quarterback. That's the main thing, just talking to him about how he see the game. I just ask- just constantly picking his brain about what you see here, why did you do this here, what you're thinking right here, and just, like I said, just constantly picking his brain and trying to soak up as much as I can."

Hopefully, Fitzpatrick's tutelage will help Moore develop into a long-term option at safety in New York. Whether that will begin this season remains to be seen.

Moore is currently battling with the likes of veterans Andre Cisco and Dane Belton for a starting job manning the Jets' backend.

So far, the early reports indicate Belton has popped the most of any safety not named Fitzpatrick. But considering both he and Cisco are one-year deals, the Jets would likely rather see Moore step up and win the job due to the fact that they're invested in his future.

Moore will have the remainder of training camp and New York's three upcoming preseason games to prove he belongs on the field when the Jets take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 1.
