The New York Jets entered the summer with four quarterbacks all vying for positioning on the team's depth chart. But after Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Giants, the Jets are down to just two healthy QBs.
Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor has been out nursing a knee injury, and head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters after Tuesday's practice that the Jets do not expect him to play in the preseason.
Taylor reportedly had a "procedure" on his knee this summer, and the Jets are opting to be cautious with their veteran QB. The team hopes he will be ready for the start of the season next month.
But Taylor isn't the only Jets quarterback dealing with an injury. Undrafted rookie Brady Cook suffered an ankle injury late in Tuesday's practice and was seen limping off to the sideline to be worked on by trainers.
Glenn offered a glimmer of optimism, saying the Jets don’t believe Cook’s injury is serious, but the rookie quarterback could still miss time, possibly including this weekend’s preseason game.
Jets might be forced to sign a QB after latest summer injury
Taylor and Cook's injuries leave the Jets with just two healthy quarterbacks on their roster: starter Justin Fields and former UFL MVP Adrian Martinez. Fields played just one series in this past weekend's 30-10 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers.
Martinez was the Jets' quarterback for the entirety of the second half, while Cook was the first QB in after Fields was taken out. If Cook is forced to miss any time, the Jets will almost certainly have to make a move at the position. Even if he's not, Taylor's injury leaves the Jets rather thin at QB this summer.
Fields also notably missed a few days of practice earlier this summer after suffering a dislocated toe. Martinez is the only quarterback on the roster who has remained healthy throughout camp.
The Jets did not bring in any tryout quarterbacks for their rookie minicamp in May, opting to stick with Cook and Martinez for the event. That means the team will have to resort to other options to find a potential camp arm for the summer.
Former Jets quarterback Tim Boyle was recently released by the Tennessee Titans this week, although most Jets fans would (rightfully) scoff at the notion of bringing him back.
Other veteran options include Carson Wentz, C.J. Beathard, Jeff Driskel, and Jake Fromm, the latter of whom was a member of the Detroit Lions' practice squad last season, giving him ties to the current Jets coaching staff.
The good news for the Jets is that neither Taylor's nor Cook's injuries appear likely to linger into the regular season. But for the time being, the team might be forced to make a temporary addition to their quarterback room.
