Jets fans may not love how Irv Charles said goodbye after Seahawks trade

So long to you too, Irv.

New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey has managed to pull off yet another trade that swaps one of his fringe roster players for a late-round pick in the NFL Draft, as he sent wide receiver and special teams ace Irv Charles away to the champion Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick.

Most Jets fans were using this trade as an opportunity to congratulate Charles' four-year career in New York, as he molded himself from an undrafted free agent player who took a multi-year hiatus from football into a reliable standout on some very good special teams units. Instead, Charles seemed eager to get out of New York.

In an Instagram post after the trade was official, Charles simply posted "outta there" with little bombast or fanfare. Charles' first instinct, being seemingly thrilled to leave the Jets, may make sense when you consider he is joining a championship contender, but some fans might be perturbed by how curt he was here.

The undrafted Charles had a remarkable story, as he went from being kicked off Penn State's team for rules violations and playing at tiny Indiana University of Pennsylvania to a semi-regular contributor for the Jets. Charles was a key special teamer for multiple seasons, leading former coach Robert Saleh to dub him a "wolf."

Charles' receiving upside, however, was very modest, as he only played a few dozen offensive snaps in his career. At age 29 and coming off an ACL injury that cost him all of the 2025 season, the Jets weren't interested in someone who only has upside as a gunner on special teams.

The Jets' top six receivers appear to be fairly set in stone as a result of this move. The top three consist of Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, and rookie Omar Cooper Jr. at the top, with veteran Tim Patrick providing size and leadership behind them. Disappointing fourth-rounder Arian Smith is getting a second chance, and Isaiah Williams has a spot safe due to his tremendous exploits as a returner last season.

The Jets had had enough of Charles, who was not going to carve out any sort of role as a pass-catcher. With him going to Seattle, which could help him get a ring if he makes the roster, another Robert Saleh holdover has been kicked off the Aaron Glenn-led roster.
