Jets fans can’t stop laughing at Bill Belichick’s humiliating UNC debut

It may be sad – but this could be the best win we get all year for the Jets.

Bill Belichick spent the better part of his football life torturing the New York Jets. I don't need to run through the many examples of this. Whether it was as the architect of the 20-year Patriots' dynasty, or as the suddently departing coach of the Jets, he made life miserable for New York.

And as he suffered one of the more embarrassing losses of his career in his opening game as the University of North Carolina head football coach on Monday, Jets fans from all over rejoiced.

As a Jets fan myself, I'm not going to tell you that I've stooped so low as to enjoy the sitcom that has become the once proud coach's life (I absolutely, without a doubt have), but I understand why fans are.

As Belichick runs around with his... interesting... girlfriend, and finds himself in headlines for just about everything other than football, it's hard for Jets nation not to enjoy it.

But what does this say about the state of the Jets' franchise? I know that a lot of fan bases have the luxury of focusing on a potential Super Bowl run. Jets fans have the luxury of living vicariously through the TCU Horned Frogs.

Jets fans can take solace in Bill Belichick's downfall

The North Carolina Tar Heels had a disappointing opening night on Monday. They opened the game hot, metriculating the ball down the field to the end zone, and scoring a quick seven points. It seemed that what many consider the greatest coach in NFL history had already brought his magic to the college ranks.

What ensued was nothing short of an absolute molly-whopping of UNC by their opponents. TCU dominated every single facet of the game decisively.

The Tarheels converted on just one of 10 third-down attempts, while the Horned Frogs converted seven of 12. North Carolina ran for just 50 yards and passed for under 200, while their counterpart put up 258 and 284 yards in the respective categories. It never felt close, and Jets fans took to social media to voice their immense pleasure in the transpirings.

As I've laid out, the joy is for good reason. It's not an exaggeration to say that Belichick has been the number one enemy in the Jets' history. When someone agrees to coach your club, only to quit via a napkin days later, and only to then win five Super Bowls for your division rival, you are going to have a permanent bitter taste in your mouth.

It doesn't just go away.

But as we all laugh at Belichick and his girlfriend's... interesting... blue pants on the sidelines, we ought to keep an eye on the nearest mirror. Because Belichick is still going to go to sleep with seven times the championship rings that the entire Jets franchise has.

And he still may turn this program around while the Jets stay locked in football quicksand. It's funny now, but it's not the greatest look of all time for Jets fans either (but it's still fun to laugh at posts like the one below).

The good news is, as I have written at nauseam all offseason, there is a vastly new culture in town. We've said that before, I get it. I'm not guaranteeing success. But things, for better or worse, are different.

All we can hope now is that Aaron Glen restores some level of success in the franchise — and sanity as a result. Maybe one day we can be happy without the downfall of our biggest rivals. Maybe, in the new era of Jets football, on-field success can bring happiness. 2025 is step one in that undertaking.
