There was a brief moment last Thursday in which the Jets fan base collectively felt a sickening case of deja vu. Reports surfaced that quarterback Justin Fields had been carted off the practice field with what was being described at the time as a possibly non-contact lower leg injury.
That phrase alone is enough to make any fan wince, especially after what happened to Aaron Rodgers just two years ago. But in a surprising and fortunate twist, the news that followed couldn’t have been much better.
It was soon reported that Fields had actually suffered a dislocated toe — not even his big toe — and he would soon return to the practice field for 7-on-7 drills this past Saturday. Now, just four days after his injury scare, Fields is back practicing in a full capacity.
The former Ohio State star returned to the field on Monday to participate in 11-on-11 drills for the first time since his injury last week. What could have been a nightmare moment for the franchise has quickly faded into a best-case scenario, and Jets fans can finally exhale.
Justin Fields returns to Jets practice on Monday
The Jets signed Fields this offseason with the hope that a fresh start and a new system could help unlock the potential that once made him a first-round pick. The team has spent much of the offseason building an offense around its new QB.
Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand has been brought in from Detroit, and he'll be paired with a rock-solid offensive line, a talented running back room, and a clear vision for a run-first offense centered around Fields.
After years of instability at quarterback, the Jets are betting on Fields to bring both playmaking and continuity. However, that vision only works if Fields is healthy and available, especially in training camp.
The Jets need Fields to develop chemistry with receivers like Garrett Wilson, acclimate to the protections up front, and fully absorb the structure of Engstrand’s offense. Any extended absence in July or August would’ve put all of that behind schedule.
Instead, Fields is right back where he needs to be. He's on the field building trust with his coaches and teammates. The early scare is over, and with Fields back at practice, the Jets can resume installing their new-look offense with their new QB leading the charge.
