Second-year defensive end Tyler Baron faces an uphill challenge of maintaining his spot on the New York Jets’ weekly gameday roster.
The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt doesn’t have high hopes for Baron succeeding in that quest.
In his latest 53-man roster projection, Rosenblatt listed Baron among the five edge rushers he expects to be cut before Week 1.
A fifth-round pick from Miami by way of Tennessee, Baron recorded nine tackles, including one for a loss, in six games last year.
However, a knee injury ended Baron’s season in December.
Baron joined Braiden McGregor, Kingsley Jonathan, Nathan Voorhis, and Paschal Ekeji on the predicted cut list.
What to know about Jets edge rusher Tyler Baron
A four-star prospect and one of the 2021 signing class’s top defensive linemen, Baron began his college career as an explosive rotational option.
The 6-foot-4, 258-pound Baron had 16.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks over his first three seasons. He mostly came off the bench for Josh Heupel and the Volunteers.
Upon securing a starting role in 2023, Baron recorded six sacks and 10.5 TFLs.
Baron finished at Miami, leading the Hurricanes in tackles for loss (10) and sacks (5.5).
NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein projected Baron would be a fifth-round pick capable of growing into a solid starter.
“Baron plays with clear eyes to read play development and locate the football but possesses just average upper- and lower-body strength to battle the block,” Zierlein wrote in a pre-draft scouting report.
The Jets would not incur a serious financial hit if they cut Baron, who signed a standard four-year rookie deal last spring.
Alternatively, the Jets could try to waive Baron and stash him on the practice squad, though his age and game experience might appeal to teams seeking depth.
Luckily for Baron, he still has training camp and the preseason to make his case, either to the Jets or another team.
Not every Day 3 pick will make the Week 1 roster, and some might even play a regular-season game as a rookie.
Baron is already an individual success. Now we’ll see whether he can build off that with the Jets, or if his chance will come elsewhere.
