The New York Jets used this offseason to upgrade the roster, and one of their best veteran additions was signing linebacker Demario Davis. They wanted better production and stability in the middle of their defense.

While that should help New York out, it also shows how they felt about linebacker Jamien Sherwood just one year after his extension.

In March 2025, the Jets gave Sherwood a three-year, $45 million extension that had $30 million fully guaranteed. Despite that hefty price tag, which has him tied for eighth in AAV among LBs, his play on the field didn't match it. And if he doesn't elevate his production in 2026, his time in New York could have an abrupt end.

Jamien Sherwood's contract makes his next season with the New York Jets critical

Last season, Sherwood appeared in all 17 games (16 starts). In those outings, he finished with 154 total tackles, eight TFLs, and eight pass deflections. While those numbers look solid, his impact wasn't felt as much.

According to Pro Football Focus, Sherwood finished with a 65.7 overall grade (35th among 88 graded LBs) and a 46.1 coverage grade (65th among 88 graded LBs).

Without C.J. Mosley next to him on the field, Sherwood was tasked with wearing the green dot and calling the plays. With a new deal and more responsibilities on his plate, it may have been too much for Sherwood.

There's a reason why the Jets brought in Davis, who will take the play-calling duties from Sherwood. That, along with being a vocal leader, should allow Sherwood to focus on his play instead. When he had a veteran next to him in Mosley, that's what allowed Sherwood to play at his best.

The Jets are looking for that version again in 2026. Because if he doesn't return to that form, his time with New York could come to an end. According to Spotrac, the Jets would save $5.5 million in cap space if they released Sherwood next offseason.

His cap hit for the 2027 season is listed at $19 million, so for the team to feel confident in him going forward, he needs to regain his 2025 form.

Sherwood has shown that he can be a quality defender at the second level, with the awareness to be sound in pass coverage. New York desperately needs that player on the gridiron, as they are a better team with him playing at that level.

Linebacker is an area fans aren't the most confident in, and Sherwood's 2025 tape is a reason for that. He needs to bounce back if he wants to be a mainstay in New York.
