It only took one game for Justin Fields to silence his biggest Jets doubters

Talk about a first impression!

Justin Fields is set to enter his first New York Jets season with more questions than answers. To some, he’s nothing more than a bridge quarterback holding down the job until the Jets find their long-term solution. Others don’t even believe he’s a starting-caliber player at this stage of his career.

With a new team, a new system, and perhaps one final shot to prove he can be an NFL starter, the stakes couldn’t be much higher for the former Chicago Bears first-round pick.

His first impression was exactly what the Jets were hoping for. In his preseason debut against the Green Packers on Saturday night, Fields wasted no time proving his doubters wrong, at least temporarily.

Fields orchestrated a sharp opening drive against the Packers' starting defense, capping it off with a 13-yard rushing touchdown to set the tone for what was an excellent preseason opener for Aaron Glenn's squad.

Fields completed 3-of-4 passes for 42 yards, ran the ball twice for 14 yards, and didn't take a single sack. He looked calm, composed, and in control in the pocket and showed a willingness to extend plays, which is ultimately what led to the Jets' first touchdown of the game.

Justin Fields shines in his Jets preseason debut

The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason as the new regime's appointed replacement for Aaron Rodgers, who was released prior to the start of free agency.

Fields spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he started six games, leading his team to a 4-2 record before he was benched in favor of the returning Russell Wilson. Still, Fields showed enough in those six games to earn another chance as a starter with the Jets this season.

He enters the 2025 season with his fourth different offensive coordinator in five NFL seasons. Tanner Engstrand was brought over with Glenn from the Detroit Lions, and the former passing game coordinator showed encouraging signs in his debut outing.

The Jets' running game was impressive with the first-team offensive line leading the charge. The Jets clearly plan to place an emphasis on the ground game in 2025, and Fields will be a big part of that. Jets fans saw glimpses of that in Saturday's preseason opener.

It may have just been one drive, but Fields showed poise, efficiency, and the kind of playmaking ability the Jets have been desperate to see from their quarterback position.

It’s always important not to overreact to a single preseason game, but it’s hard to imagine a more promising start to Fields’ Jets career.

For a player facing as much scrutiny as he is, delivering a confident, efficient, and dynamic opening performance is exactly the kind of early momentum both he and the team needed. Jets football is back, and this team has itself a new QB.
