Geno Smith disrespect alive and well as Jets' triplets ranking is way too low

Is Geno being fairly rated?

The New York Jets' decision to bring back Geno Smith as the starting quarterback has been largely derided as an ineffective move by NFL media, even when considering the dearth of other veteran options on the market. Even a team with its entire starting non-Geno offense under contract through 2027 can't escape the negative ripple effects.

CBS Sports' rankings of NFL "triplets" (quarterback, running back, No. 1 pass-catcher) has the Jets ranked 29th in the league. Only the Browns, Dolphins, and Titans were beneath them. Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson are well-regarded throughout the league, putting most of the blame for this ranking on Smith.

Even though the Jets were only separated from the three teams ahead of them in the Panthers, Steelers, and Cardinals by just a few tiny percentage points in CBS' formula, the fact that Smith is dragging them this far down seems like a bit of an overreaction, especially when considering the quality Hall and Wilson provide.

Jets 'triplets' ranked 29th in NFL due to Geno Smith

Yes, Wilson didn't even hit 400 yards receiving last season. However, he was playing with a quarterback in Justin Fields who, without a shred of hyperbole, was scared to throw the ball. After an injury sustained in the middle of the season against the Denver Broncos, Wilson was shut down. He should remind everyone of his quality in 2026.

Hall, who was just recently handed a three-year contract extension, could be in for his best season as a pro. Most running backs need competent quarterback play and an above-average offensive line to succeed, and Hall has neither of those two traits in all four pro seasons. The Jets' line and Smith's talents should benefit him.

As is always the case when discussing the Jets, it all comes down to Smith. Raiders Geno is a one-way ticket to fighting for Arch Manning with the No. 1 pick, while anything even close to Seahawks Geno should have a team with this much offensive firepower fighting for a .500 record.

While the Jets did the best they could in improving their quarterback room when the options were limited, Smith is still very much a question mark, and the Jets will never really take the step forward Aaron Glenn is eyeing unless they can somehow get No. 7 to play as he did in Seattle. Without it, a No. 1 pick might be on the horizon.
