Garrett Wilson's playoff comments show the Jets are thinking the right way

The New York Jets have the longest playoff drought among North American sports teams, with 15 years without making the postseason. The belief around the team among most national media members is that New York won't snap the streak this year, but receiver Garrett Wilson doesn't feel that way.

When speaking to reporters, Wilson was asked what success this season would look like, and he named the playoffs.

"The playoffs. No doubt about it, man. Nothing else … it’s very realistic. I think it should happen. It’s our job to go play ball and do it. That’s how I feel about it," Wilson said, per The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt.

Most people don't have that same conviction around New York, yet Wilson's confidence is exactly what you need and want to see from one of your top players.

It hasn't been an easy journey for Wilson ever since coming to town in 2022. In his four campaigns in New York, the Jets have gone 22-46 in that timeframe. The best they've ever gone in a season with Wilson is 7-10, as they never had a real shot at making the playoffs, aside from the 2022 season, when they lost six straight to end the year.

It has been a grind for Wilson, but despite that, his confidence hasn't wavered. And his belief that the team can make the postseason is the mindset you want.

Even though a 7-10/8-9 season would be considered a positive step for fans and national media, players in the locker room don't want that. They want to be playing meaningful football in January. They have trained relentlessly over the past couple of months to put themselves in the best position to do so.

And there's no hiding that the Jets are more talented than they were last year. Granted, that wasn't a high bar to clear, but at the same time, that's the progress that you want to see. Now, it's all about what happens on the football field.

If the Jets are going to win games this year, Wilson will need to have a highly productive season. More of that will fall on Geno Smith's shoulders and health. If he can stay active for the bulk of the season and be an average quarterback, there's no doubt that Wilson will put up rockstar numbers. He has done so while playing with far less talented quarterbacks.

Aaron Glenn is certainly in the hot seat and needs to win games to keep his job. There's no doubt he's looking to craft game plans that will put New York in positions to win, but it comes down to what the players on the field do.

All 53 men on the roster must have the same objective, and that's to make the playoffs. It doesn't matter what anyone outside that building thinks. Wilson's comments show that there's belief inside that locker room, and that mindset is what fans want from their best players. And Wilson has shown that.
