The New York Jets' passing game, when not targeting Garrett Wilson, was completely pathetic in their Week 5 duel against the Cleveland Browns. However, Braelon Allen and the ground game were strong enough to carry this offense without Breece Hall. Wilson took notice of how Allen capped off this 17-12 victory.

Allen polished off the best game of his professional career, running 24 times for 116 yards and a touchdown that put New York up late in the fourth quarter. Wilson noted that Cleveland was not too eager to tackle Allen late in the game, as his bulky frame was running right through an undermanned Browns defense.

Wilson accused the Browns of taking "creative angles" when Allen got a full head of steam and continued to imply Cleveland was "running next to him" rather than trying to knock him down head-on. Allen's bowling-ball frame running with the level of confidence fans saw in the win against the Browns could make him a weapon in the short-term future.

Garrett Wilson says Browns didn't want to tackle Braelon Allen in New York Jets' Week 5 win

Allen has always been a frustrating evaluation, even going back to his days at Wisconsin. While the talent and physical gifts are obvious even to the blind, he never ran as hard north-and-south as someone who is closer to Derrick Henry's size than all but a handful of backs in the league. This win against the Browns was perfectly engineered for Allen to break out.

On top of the fact that the downpour handcuffed both passing games, a Browns team that came into this game with a defensive line lacking in depth lost standout Mason Graham to injury. If anything, part of the reason Jets fans were displeased with offensive coordinator Frank Reich was his refusal to lean on Allen as much as he should have.

Allen will be the bell cow running back until Hall returns from injury. However, with every impressive play Allen makes as a starter, it will become harder for this coaching staff to banish him to a seldom-used reserve role behind Hall. The Jets may not have seen the best of him yet.

New York Jets RB Braelon Allen had the best game of his career in Week 5

Allen is still just 22 years old, and the fact that he clocked in at over 240 pounds in the offseason suggests that he is still growing into his body. If he can make incremental improvements as a pass-catcher and pass-blocker, Allen may earn enough of an RB2 role that New York goes into every game trying to give him a package of plays.

The Jets could have a very enticing smash-and-dash combination with Hall and Allen, as the former's pass-catching explosiveness and the latter's ability to wear down defenses could work in tandem with great effect.

Wilson knows the kind of unique talent Allen can be, as even 3-1 teams like the Browns don't attack him with the required fervor needed to bring him down late in games.
