Ex-Jets star Jamal Adams suffers injury in first preseason game with Vikings

Ex-New York Jets safety Jamal Adams has had an up-and-down career since burning his way out of the franchise that drafted him, bouncing around from team to team as he looked to find a new home that could maximize his unique talents.

It seemed like he might have found that home this offseason, when he signed a deal to join the Minnesota Vikings. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores is one of the game's brightest minds, and it seemed like he had a plan to utilize the former All-Pro's abilities.

Unfortunately, it seems that Adams' 2026 season is in jeopardy after being carted off the field during Minnesota's first preseason game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, per The Minnesota Star Tribune's Ben Goessling.

"They're calling for a cart for Jamal Adams, who was injured on the Vikings' last defensive series. He's been in the medical tent for a long time, with Josh Metellus, Byron Murphy Jr. and Theo Jackson all heading in to check on him. Metellus came out with his head in his hands, and Brian Flores just emerged from the tent."

It's a tough blow for both the Vikings and Adams, as by multiple accounts, he was having a strong training camp and acclimating well to Flores' defensive scheme.

The injury came early in the second quarter, following Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart re-entering the game after being checked for a concussion. Adams was in coverage over the middle of the field on wide receiver Calvin Austin.

Without touching anyone, Adams came tumbling to the turf, and a cart was called over to take him to the blue medical tent. There is currently no indication of the exact injury he suffered.

Prior to signing with Minnesota, Adams made his case several times on social media for a return to the team that drafted him, and it actually made quite a bit of sense.

You see, after bouncing around from team to team following his release from the Seattle Seahawks, Adams spent the 2025 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where then-head coach Pete Carroll switched his position from safety to linebacker.

The Jets actually could've used some depth at linebacker, considering they're fairly thin at the position behind Demario Davis and Jamien Sherwood. Had it not been for some of the baggage from his previous departure from New York, maybe it would have made sense.

Instead, Adams ended up on the Vikings, and fingers crossed, he's able to make his return at some point down the road.
