Ex-Jets player unleashes harsh reality check on Justin Fields' NFL future

Justin Fields is not the answer.

The New York Jets' two-game win streak was short-lived as they fell to the New England Patriots 27-14 on Thursday night. Aaron Glenn and the Jets now fall to 2-8 on the season and are still searching for answers.

After a promising start to the game for the Jets and their offense, it looked like New York may have found a formula to upset the Patriots. Unfortunately, the momentum gained on that 14-play, 72-yard touchdown drive quickly fizzled out.

The biggest reason the offense fell dormant again was another poor performance by Justin Fields. This performance led to much scrutiny and criticism of Fields' play on Thursday, headlined by former Jet Willie Colon.

During the SNY Jets postgame show, Colon was blunt in his assessment of Fields, saying he isn't an NFL quarterback. Colon also went on to say how Fields should have been benched to start the second half of Thursday's game.

With the way this season has gone for Fields, it's hard to argue this take from the former Jets offensive lineman.

Justin Fields gets blasted with criticism after latest Jets loss

Thursday night was another all-too-familiar performance from Justin Fields and this Jets offense. After the first drive, which only saw Fields attempt one pass, it went all downhill for the Jets' quarterback.

Fields finished the game, completing just 57.7% of his passes for 116 yards, one touchdown, and just 4.5 yards per attempt. The 26-year-old quarterback also had a crushing fumble when New York was trying to mount a ten-point comeback down 24-14 in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately for Fields and the Jets, this has been a problem all season. New York is averaging just 139.9 passing yards per game this season, which would be the lowest in the NFL since the 2022 Chicago Bears, who also had Justin Fields under center.

When the Jets signed Fields after moving on from Aaron Rodgers, it was the right move to make. Best case scenario, Fields turns into the long-term solution, and worst case scenario, he doesn't work out and the Jets draft a quarterback in 2026. The result is the latter.

Fields just isn't a good NFL quarterback, and it's not hard to see that. This is his third team in five years, and this season, he has only gotten worse. The athleticism is off the charts, always has been, but the slow processing and overall passing ability are not even close to starting NFL caliber.

Sitting at 2-8 on the season, with Fields only getting worse, Aaron Glenn needs to make a change at quarterback. Fields' 501 first-half passing yards rank 32nd in the NFL, one of just many ugly statistics that tell the story of his 2025 season.

Is Tyrod Taylor the savior? No, but the veteran quarterback can run an offense and will take chances downfield, something that Fields hasn't done enough of this season. Taylor's ability to process a defense and find the open receiver on time is also exponentially better than what the former first-round pick has shown.

Aaron Glenn has no loyalty to Justin Fields. It's okay to admit a mistake and move forward. That's what needs to be done by the time the Jets head to Baltimore next week.
