Dolphins' offensive staff may be worse than Jets after laughable hire

He can't keep getting away with it!

The New York Jets are in the middle of one of the most chaotic and problematic offensive coordinator searches in recent memory, but they may end up with a better staff around whomever their top quarterback will be than the rival Miami Dolphins after their latest move.

The Miami Dolphins decided to hire a defensive coach by nabbing Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, and there is reason to question if he is putting together an offensive staff that is going to get the most out of either Tua Tagovailoa or whoever replaces him.

Not only did the Dolphins hire former Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik to the same position after a mixed play-calling tenure, but they also hired Nathaniel Hackett to be their quarterbacks coach. Yes, Jets fans, that Nathaniel Hackett.

One would think that Hackett's stint with the Jets was so bad that no one would go near him with a ten-foot pole for any role that had merit to it, but Hafley seems to think a guy who is viewed by the rest of the NFL as poison for any offensive staff is going to be the secret ingredient that fixes this offense.

Jets fans can laugh at Dolphins for hiring Nathaniel Hackett as QB coach

Hackett has not held even a position coach role since the Jets dismissed him, as he spent last season in a vague analyst role with Green Bay. Hackett has not been a quarterback coach since the 2016 season, when he oversaw the offensive juggernaut that was the Blake Bortles-led Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hackett, who famously didn't even make it one season as head coach of the Denver Broncos, oversaw two seasons of painful Jets offenses, ranking 29th and 24th in points per game. Between overseeing another brutal Zach Wilson campaign and struggling to score with Aaron Rodgers, Hackett's performance was horrendous.

To make matters worse, the rotten interpersonal dynamics of the Jets prevented him from being fired due to his connection with Rodgers. As a result, Hackett was demoted to a non-play-calling role in favor of Todd Downing. Hackett's resume of late is completely unbecoming of an NFL-level coach.

Hackett's role may be nothing more than a nominal one if Slowik takes up a bigger role than he had in Houston, but Jets fans know as well as any fanbase what can happen to a passing game when Hackett can influence how things operate.
