Reports have made it clear that the NY Jets' preferred quarterback target this offseason is Justin Fields. The former Chicago Bears quarterback is set to enter free agency and is expected to garner plenty of leaguewide interest.
One of the biggest threats to the Jets in the Fields sweepstakes is the Pittsburgh Steelers. They remain interested in re-signing Fields and are expected to make a strong push before free agency.
The Steelers were also active in the wide receiver market before landing former Seahawks star DK Metcalf in Sunday’s blockbuster trade. His addition gives Pittsburgh one of the NFL’s top receiver duos and could make them an even more attractive destination for quarterbacks.
One might assume this makes Fields more likely to re-sign with Pittsburgh, and while that could be true, another factor could actually increase his chances of landing with the Jets. Let's call it the Russell Wilson effect.
DK Metcalf trade could help the NY Jets land Justin Fields
The Steelers have a decision to make at quarterback this offseason. They could opt to re-sign Fields or Wilson, or they could explore other options via free agency (Aaron Rodgers?) or the 2025 NFL Draft (Jaxson Dart?).
All options seemingly remain on the table, but the Metcalf trade gives them an extra incentive to bring Wilson back. Wilson and Metcalf spent three years together as teammates in Seattle before the former left to join the Denver Broncos.
This trade reunites what was, at one point, one of the best quarterback-wide receiver duos in the NFL. Wilson and Metcalf remain close to this day and even share a connection through their respective significant others.
DK Metcalf’s girlfriend, Normani, recently revealed that Russell Wilson and his wife, Ciara, were actually the ones who set her and Metcalf up.

That connection could convince Wilson to return to Pittsburgh, opening the door for the Jets to sign Fields. The Jets appear to be eyeing Fields as their top target in free agency.
SNY's Connor Hughes reported on Sunday that Fields will have to decide whether he wants to sign with the Jets or the Steelers. If the Jets miss out on Fields, their reported contingency plans, according to Hughes, include Marcus Mariota and Carson Wentz.
While Pittsburgh remains a strong contender, the situation is far from settled, and the Jets could take advantage if Fields’ market shifts in their favor after the Metcalf trade. With free agency looming, the race for Fields is heating up. It's up to Fields and the Steelers to make their decisions.
