D.J. Reed makes it clear he doesn't want to play for NY Jets in 2025

The NY Jets will likely undergo a bit of a roster overhaul this offseason with a new regime and a struggling football team, and one player who seems likely to be gone is cornerback D.J. Reed.

Reed has quietly been one of the better players on the Jets' defense since signing a three-year, $33 million contract with the team in the 2022 offseason. Despite the defense's struggles in 2024, Reed has still been excellent value on that contract.

But with the Jets eyeing a Sauce Gardner extension in the near future — and with Michael Carter II already extended — it's become increasingly clear that Reed is on borrowed time in New York. And that seems to be just fine with him.

Reed spoke with Go Long’s Tyler Dunne following the Jets' Week 17 loss to the Buffalo Bills and candidly admitted that he has no intentions of remaining with the Jets beyond this season. He's ready for his time in Florham Park to come to an end.

"I was going to have 10 picks. We were going to be elite. I thought that we’d be up in the score late in games and teams would have to throw the ball and I’m going to make plays on the ball."

Reed lamented his team's disappointing season before acknowledging his upcoming free agency. When asked if he wants to be a member of the Jets in 2025, Reed shook his head no.

“I’m ready to go to free agency, bro,” Reed told Dunne. “I’m ready to see what’s next for me.”

Reed is set to be a free agent this offseason and all signs have pointed to the Jets moving on from the veteran cornerback. The Jets have already paid Carter and will pay Gardner in the near future — Reed was unfortunately destined to be the odd man out.

The feeling seems to be mutual, though, with Reed openly admitting he's ready to move on from the Jets. It should be jarring to hear such a candid and honest response from a team's standout defensive back, but nothing is shocking with this Jets team.

His blunt remarks might raise eyebrows elsewhere, but with the Jets, it’s just another chapter in their ongoing saga. The Jets' season has devolved into a familiar state of chaos, with internal tensions and external criticism becoming the norm. Reed’s candid comments reflect the discontent simmering within the organization.

What once promised to be a season of hope with a star-studded roster has turned into a cautionary tale of unmet expectations and mismanagement. For fans, it’s another bitter reminder of the franchise’s long-standing inability to break free from dysfunction.

For Reed, he's ready for the nightmare to end.
