Darren Mougey can't be serious about his assessment of the Jets' current WR group

This has to be a smoke screen, right?

The New York Jets have been active spenders in free agency this offseason and have addressed multiple positions that needed it across the roster. They added multiple edge rushers, a handful of defensive backs, and a former All-Pro linebacker in Demario Davis.

One spot they've yet to address? The wide receiver position. Yeah, they've got Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell, but behind them are 2025 fourth-round pick Arian Smith and return specialist Isaiah Williams.

Clearly, that's not good enough heading into the 2026 season, and the Jets need to add a few more bodies to the room before it's even considered an okay position group.

Unless you're Darren Mougey, and you think you're all good with the way things are currently constructed.

Darren Mougey somehow feels "good" about the Jets WR room

The Jets general manager was asked at the league owners' meetings about the current state of New York's wide receiver room, and gave a head-scratching response.

"I feel good about the wide receiver room. Obviously, getting Garrett back and healthy will be big for us. And seeing A.D. Mitchell and Isaiah and Arian, having those guys take the next step and continue to grow. But like all positions, we'll continue to evaluate the markets and see, is there an opportunity to add competition in depth."

Now, this could be a tongue-in-cheek remark from Mougey. On one hand, he said he feels good about his wideouts, but also made sure to note that they'll "evaluate the market" and see if they can add some depth.

The Jets don't really have a choice. There's no way Geno Smith gets through a 17-game season with the way things are currently constructed.

Garrett Wilson is a star, yes, and Adonai Mitchell has shown flashes, but you need some capable depth. It's why Mougey was so aggressive last year in adding pass catchers at the deadline, like John Metchie and Mitchell.

Wilson ended up leading the Jets in receiving last season, despite not catching a pass after Week 6. That can't happen again under any circumstances.

The Jets will likely add multiple receivers from now until training camp. Hopefully, one of the premier prospects falls to them at No. 16 in the draft, and they can find a veteran to sign on the cheap at the start of the summer.

Either way, the Jets need to make an addition, and Mougey has to know that. Otherwise, he's just playing dumb.
