Darian Mensah will quickly become a quarterback the Jets should know

The New York Jets are set to kick off the 2026 season with a road game against the Tennessee Titans. This matchup and the rest of the season will be the prime focus for the coaches and players in the building, but as fans, the 2027 NFL Draft will consistently be top of mind.

With three first-round picks, the belief is that the Jets will select their next franchise quarterback. Guys like Texas' Arch Manning, Oregon's Dante Moore, Notre Dame's CJ Carr, and USC's Jayden Maiava have already been discussed, but Miami's Darian Mensah is someone fans should pay close attention to.

Mensah transferred to Miami and kicked his Hurricanes career off in style. In the opening win over Stanford, Mensah was 27-of-30 for 401 passing yards and five passing touchdowns. While this was just one game, what Mensah showed in that game was promising, and people inside the Jets organization should make sure they keep an eye on him the rest of the fall.

Darian Mensah could emerge as a major New York Jets target

In the win over the Cardinals, Mensah was pinpoint accurate, passed with touch, had an answer for blitzes thrown his way, and was poised under center. It was a great opener and displayed what he's capable of doing down in Miami this season.

This is Mensah's third college team, but he has consistently moved up in terms of competition. He started his collegiate career at Tulane in 2024, then transferred to Duke for 2025. At both stops, Mensah completed 66 percent of his passes for 6,696 passing yards, 56 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

From Year 1 to Year 2, Mensah increased his passing yards and passing touchdowns. With him getting another 12-15 starts this year, in addition to playing with the best offensive talent (Malachi Toney is a superstar) he's had in college, the sky is the limit.

Mensah may not wow you with his arm talent, but his arm strength is good enough. Things like his accuracy, touch, and processing ability are top-notch. For a Jets team that will need a long-term answer at quarterback, Mensah could be a name heavily discussed in a couple of months.

For New York's sake, the more talented the college quarterbacks are, the better. More options would be big, but the work starts now to learn as much as possible about these players. We already know Manning and Moore will be discussed more, but getting to know Mensah shouldn't be overlooked.

He's been a highly effective quarterback in college, and if he continues to take steps in 2026, he must be someone who's on New York's radar. Some of his strengths could easily transfer over to the NFL, and what he does for the Hurricanes will be interesting.
