Could Geno Smith actually lead the Jets to 'the promised land'?

What are the chances, really?

No one really expects the New York Jets to contend for a Super Bowl championship in 2026, but that didn't stop head coach Aaron Glenn from touting that new quarterback Geno Smith is going to lead them to "the promised land" earlier in the spring.

In this era of the NFL, is it really all that far-fetched? No one expected Sam Darnold to go from the Minnesota Vikings to the Seattle Seahawks and win Super Bowl MVP this past season.

Is there a snowball's chance that Smith could do the impossible and lead the Jets to their first Super Bowl since 1969?

Could Geno Smith pull off a 'Sam Darnold'?

In reality, Smith's best-case scenario as the Jets starter in 2026 is earning himself another year in the NFL as a starting quarterback.

Coming off his disastrous 2025 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, the former 2013 second-round pick's career is on life support.

After a few promising years with the Seahawks, Smith only threw for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. He helped lead the Raiders to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Now, the former Jets draft pick is going to have a much-improved supporting cast in New York this upcoming season. He'll have a lot better protection up front, a legitimately good array of weaponry to work with led by Garrett Wilson, and hopefully, better coaching.

Smith's offensive coordinator in Las Vegas, Chip Kelly, was fired in November of last season, barely a few months on the job. Frank Reich may have had one foot in the retirement door prior to taking the Jets gig, but he should still have something up his sleeve.

If the Jets veteran quarterback can replicate his production from his peak Seahawks days, New York should be in good hands.

In 2022, Smith had the best season of his career. He set career-highs with 4,282 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, and led Seattle to a 10-win season and playoff berth.

Jets fans would kill for that kind of production from the quarterback position.

Smith is unlikely to take New York to the Super Bowl in 2026, but if he can bring them some competent play and maybe even a wild-card spot, it would be the most excitement Jets fans have seen in years.
