After failing to live up to the hype with the Chicago Bears, NY Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields is trying to show that his combination of skills can become an effective starter when he isn't running for his life on every play.
The situations Fields was coming from may be even more dire than most previously had thought it was. Caleb Williams was reportedly so scared of the situation Fields found himself in that he tried to engineer a way to ditch Chicago before they took him with the No. 1 overall pick.
According to an expert from Seth Wickersham's latest book, Williams was reportedly so concerned about going to the Bears that he and his father (who declared Chicago as "the place quarterbacks go to die" in that book) were trying to manufacture either a trade that sent him to the Minnesota Vikings or a move to join the United Football League to avoid this franchise.
Williams also mentioned that he was not set up for success, saying that recently fired coaches Matt Eberflus and Shane Waldron provided him with no help and structure in the film room. If Fields could overcome those conditions (to some degree), New York could be a refreshing change of pace.
Jets fans should get hyped for Justin Fields after escaping chaotic Bears
Fields' Steelers tenure was marred by average to subpar offensive coaching and a lack of wide receiver talent, and he still managed to win four out of his six starts while throwing just one interception. Pittsburgh Fields might be a more accurate depiction of what he is as a professional player.
The Bears, who have never had a 4,000-yard passer in their history, gave Fields one of the worst offensive lines in the league, and he still managed to run for 1,100 yards in his first full season as a starter. Fields' time in Chicago was the equivalent of playing underwater due to the constant change around him.
With the Jets, Fields will get (arguably) the best wide receiver he has worked with in Garrett Wilson in addition to one of the best young offensive lines in the NFL and a disciple of Ben Johnson's offensive style in new OC Tanner Engstrand.
Fields may not become a superstar with the Jets, but he has more than enough basic physical skill to become enough of a solid passer to prove he can be a viable starter when given proper support.
