Adam Gase getting mocked by Chargers fans is free entertainment for the Jets

Thursday afternoon presented a familiar scenario for New York Jets fans, who watched social media users mock longtime NFL assistant coach Adam Gase following his team’s most recent loss.

The good news: The Jets weren’t the ones drawing the insults or becoming the subject of mediocre memes.

Instead, X/Twitter commenters turned their attention to Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers, who hired Gase as a passing game specialist this past offseason. We’d have thought that Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel would want to help Justin Herbert firmly establish himself as a top-five quarterback.

Last Sunday proved nightmarish for Herbert and a highly touted Chargers offense. The two-time Pro Bowler went 17-of-27 for 209 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in a stunning Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Levitan’s post had over 1.1 million views as of Friday morning, with many questioning why Harbaugh had even bothered to hire Gase. Perhaps the best response came from an X/Twitter user who referenced Gase’s 2013-14 tenure as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator, writing, “Can you guess which two seasons Adam fetched coffee for Peyton Manning?” 

Frankly, the most surprising part of the viral Gase X/Twitter post was learning that he was even still employed in the NFL. Indeed, this year marks his first official NFL job since the Jets fired him in January 2021; he’d primarily done consulting and helped Eli and Peyton Manning study film ahead of their “Manningcast” broadcasts.

We’re sure that Gase makes for an excellent consultant. He can walk potential coaching candidates through how to best handle giving up play-calling, firing a defensive coordinator amid a 0-13 start, and winning less than 29% of your games over two years. 

In all seriousness, what value does a job like “passing game specialist” bring to a team? We don’t fault Gase for taking the role, and it’s not impossible that anecdotes from his time around Manning could be helpful. If anything, he probably has some entertaining stories about a quarterback known for his pranks and humor.

Don’t pin Herbert’s disappointing Week 1 performance on Gase. For as talented as the 2020 No. 6 pick is, he’s always struggled to properly elevate the Chargers, especially early in the season; Herbert has lost 11 of his 20 September starts, entering Sunday’s clash with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jets fans already took their revenge on Robert Saleh, and they’ll get their chance to beat Gase on November 22. But based on the way the Chargers looked last Sunday, maybe Harbaugh will have promoted the ex-Jets coach by that point.
