Aaron Rodgers might've sealed his NY Jets fate after snapping historic streak
By Justin Fried
On the day the NY Jets officially extended their dreadful playoff drought to 14 years, their quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, managed to end an unfortunate streak of his own when he threw for 300 yards.
Sunday's 32-26 loss to the Miami Dolphins marked the first time in 35 consecutive starts that Rodgers had thrown for 300+ passing yards. It was one of his best performances of the season, but it unfortunately came in vain.
The Jets invented new ways to lose this week, much like they have all season. Despite Rodgers' big day and 100+ receiving yards from both Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams, the Dolphins were no match for the Jets' ineptitude. They always find a way.
Unfortunately for Rodgers, his impressive performance leaves the Jets one step closer to finding his replacement. If his Jets fate wasn't already sealed, Sunday's game didn't help his case.
Aaron Rodgers is helping the NY Jets find his successor
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that the Jets are "likely" to add a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. That notion seems to be true regardless of what happens with Rodgers this offseason.
But the higher the Jets pick in the draft, the likelier it is that they will land one of the top QB prospects. The more losses the Jets rack up, the less willing they will be to run it back with Rodgers on the roster in any capacity next season.
Reports already suggest that the Jets plan to part ways with Rodgers this offseason, and the prevailing belief is that the feeling is mutual. But perhaps there's still some sliver of hope if Rodgers plays well and the Jets win a few games late in the year.
Doing so would not only improve Rodgers' stock but also tank the Jets' draft position, possibly leaving them out of the running for the top quarterback prospects in this year's class.
Rodgers held up his end of the bargain on Sunday, completing 27-of-39 passes for 339 yards and a touchdown. He drove down the field and led the Jets to what could have been a game-winning scoring drive with under a minute to play.
But this is the 2024 New York Jets we're talking about — a team that has elevated losing to an art form. They epitomize dysfunction.
The Jets currently sit at seventh in the draft order, but that's subject to change as the rest of the week's games unfold. At 3-10, there's every chance they finish with a top-five pick. Sunday's loss certainly helped matters.
Rodgers may have ended his streak, but the Jets ensured theirs went untouched. Now, they're one step closer to potentially finding their Aaron Rodgers successor.
