It is hard to imagine the idea that Aaron Rodgers gave much of anything (positive) to the New York Jets beyond a mediocre 2024 season and plenty of unwanted media coverage, but in a roundabout way, that's exactly what he did.
Now that his post-June 1 release is official, Rodgers' release gives the Jets an extra $7 million in cap space going into the rest of the offseason.
This last "parting gift," so to speak, could actually come into play in significant fashion, too, if the Jets so desired to use it.
As of right now, the Jets have just north of $36 million in cap space per Over The Cap. That happens to be good for fourth-most in the league, and again, could come in handy in the future.
The Jets can use money saved from Aaron Rodgers to go out and plug one a few remaining holes
If you were to ask Jets fans, they'd probably tell you the team still has some depth needs at positions like wide receiver, offensive tackle or defensive tackle. Fortunately, there are still some veterans available in the free agent pool who could be of interest.
One of the bigger names is Keenan Allen, who last year played for the Chicago Bears and previously spent several seasons with the Chargers.
Coming in alongside Garrett Wilson, Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard, the former Bear and Charger would be able to earn the WR2 role without question. He'd become a security blanket for Justin Fields and a fantastic go-to option next to Wilson.
When it comes to offensive tackle or defensive tackle, there aren't exactly a ton of prominent names left without a team. But, that's not to say New York wouldn't be active near the trade deadline if they were competitive.
So, the added cap space could come into play during the season as well.
Regardless, it's nice to finally, officially be relieved of the headache that was Rodgers and even get one last small offering.
