Aaron Rodgers doesn’t know if he’ll still be the NY Jets' quarterback in 2025, but his recent comments suggest he’s already considering his team's future and which players are worth keeping around.
Rodgers and the Jets dropped their 11th game of the season on Sunday as they plummeted to 4-11 following a 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The Jets don't have much to play for over the final two weeks of the season, but Rodgers has one goal in mind.
The future Hall of Fame quarterback didn't mince words when speaking to reporters after the game, issuing a stark challenge to his teammates as the Jets limp toward the season’s end.
Rodgers emphasized the importance of the final two games, stating they’ll reveal who is committed to the team’s future and who might not belong. Of course, Rodgers himself might not even be here next year, but it's the thought that counts, right?
"You've got to figure out what it means to be a professional. I think that’s an important part of building culture and for the last two weeks, we can really see who’s on board moving forward and who is ready to get out."Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers is fighting for his NY Jets future over the next two weeks
Rodgers emphasized that it will be "interesting to watch" his teammates' practice habits and effort levels over the final two weeks of the season. He challenged his teammates to put in the same energy despite their team's poor record.
The same should be true for Rodgers himself, who is far from guaranteed to be on the Jets' roster in 2025. The four-time MVP is, in many ways, fighting for his Jets future over the next two weeks.
The Jets will have a decision to make on his future in the coming weeks/months. That decision will (hopefully) come down to the next regime, but a strong finish to the 2024 season could go a long way toward convincing the organization to keep Rodgers around for another year.
Rodgers didn't do himself many favors with his team's performance on Sunday. While Rodgers' final stat line — 28-of-42 for 256 yards and a touchdown — might seem encouraging on paper, the Jets scored just nine points. Rodgers was also the culprit of a crushing strip sack that essentially sealed a win for the Rams.
The 41-year-old put together an impressive performance against the 32nd-ranked Jacksonville Jaguars defense in Week 15. but the Jets will need to see more from Rodgers if he's going to stick around in 2025. The financial ramifications of keeping him another year aren't pretty.
Rodgers' challenge to his teammates might ring hollow if he's not in the Jets' future plans for 2025. The next two weeks may offer little more than a preview of what could be his final days in green and white.
