The New York Jets are pivoting hard from the ill-fated Aaron Rodgers and Robert Saleh, choosing to take gambles on former cornerback Aaron Glenn as head coach and ex-first-round pick Justin Fields under center. Even in the offseason, the hype surrounding this duo is palpable.
Not only does Glenn think that Fields has the potential to get this team turned around as the starting quarterback, but he also complemented the way Fields goes about his business in a way that seemed like a clear and obvious dig at Rodgers and the circus he brings.
“He’s not trying to be the celebrity quarterback, he’s just trying to be himself,” Glenn said, via The Athletic, “And whatever comes with that, it comes with it. So, he’s not trying to impress anybody. He’s going out there and he’s busting his a– trying to be the best quarterback he can be for this team. Everybody sees that — and I like that.”
The "celebrity quarterback" quote is straight from Parcells' vocabulary, as that is the epitome of exactly what he did not want to see from one of his signal-callers. Parcells is one of only a few coaches who have had any success in New York, so it makes sense for Glenn to follow his lead.
Aaron Glenn sounds like Bill Parcells with Justin Fields quote
Glenn has mentioned quite often that Fields was not regularly placed in an environment where he could freely and effectively play quarterback. The era of micromanaging and training wheels seems to be at an end, which is ideal for a Jets team that will likely be playing with house money in a rebuilding year.
Rosenblatt's reporting coincides with many of the same positive reports that anyone around Fields for an extended time has heard. His work ethic has drawn exceptional reviews, and an offensive coaching staff that helped Jared Goff get his mojo back with the Detroit Lions could be just what the doctor ordered for Fields.
Glenn knows that he will likely have the leeway to draft another possible franchise quarterback if things start to go under with Fields. However, Fields is likely aware of the fact that this is the last house on the block in terms of being a starting quarterback entering the season, and Glenn is banking on that hunger turning Fields into a high-end starter.
Glenn knows that he needs a no-nonsense quarterback to get the Rodgers stink off this team, and Fields has been performing admirably in that area so far.
