The New York Jets need to unleash No. 2 overall pick David Bailey in their new-look defense, as the highest-drafted defensive player in franchise history should be expected to come right in and immediately play a huge part in taking this defense from the pits they found themselves in to an above-average unit.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn doesn't seem like he's going to make Bailey fight his way into the starting lineup, as he is already reorienting his defense almost entirely around the former Texas Tech dynamo and his ability to get after the quarterback.
Glenn said that he envisions Bailey as one of the starting outside linebackers in 3-4 alignments and a starting defensive end if the Jets go with four down linemen. Glenn also made mention of multiple sub-packages that will help Bailey go wild as a pass rusher.
Not only did Glenn essentially confirm that the Jets will be running a ton of 3-4 looks this season by declaring Bailey an "outside backer" in this press conference, but he also hinted that Bailey is going to be on the field as much as the game situation will allow during his rookie season.
Aaron Glenn outlines plans for Jets No. 2 pick David Bailey
Bailey was the most productive pass rusher in college football last season, and a Jets team that ranked 31st in sacks and traded Jermaine Johnson was in dire need of a game-changing playmaker on the edge to get this defense back on track.
Glenn said that he isn't concerned about Bailey's ability to set the edge and play the run, saying that he has shown flashes that he can be much better than he was in college in that particular area. Even if he isn't Reggie White setting the edge, his speed and pass-rush upside will lead to him making plays.
Bailey will need to play alongside another poor run defender in Will McDonald. To make up for their deficiencies in that area, the Jets will lean on two younger free agent signings in Joseph Ossai and Kingsley Enagbare in key situations.
Glenn mentioned that fellow rookie defensive tackle Darrell Jackson Jr. and his 7-2 wingspan will play a "big end" role for the Jets, meaning that he and T'Vondre Sweat could possibly share the field together. Having big bodies like that in the middle can mitigate playing two subpar run defenders in Bailey and McDonald.
