Critics and pundits spent much of the past week pointing out that the New York Jets were only 4-17 in Aaron Glenn’s first 21 games.
And while his record improving to 5-17 won’t earn him widespread applause, the embattled second-year head coach still deserves kudos for Sunday’s triumph over the Cleveland Browns. Taking down a division leader, albeit an overachieving 3-1 Browns team, tends to generate goodwill among a long-suffering Jets fanbase.
Glenn can thank his defense, which recorded eight sacks and held the Browns to under 200 total yards, for the surprising home win.
“I give those guys all the credit in the world, that they flushed whatever happened last week and they moved onto this week,” Glenn told reporters. “Our mentality this whole week is ‘Let’s just be 1-0.’”
The Jets definitely succeeded in that regard, and we imagine it’ll at least temporarily quiet the speculation about Glenn’s future.
Did New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn increase his job security with a Week 5 win?
To steal a line from The Jet Press’s Charlie Baduini, no one is calling Glenn’s coaching a “masterclass.” Penalties remain a significant issue, and the Jets lost over 100 yards on ten flags. Add in two lost fumbles, and you’ll quickly understand why Frank Reich’s offense managed only 17 points.
But a win is a win, and you’ll likely see fewer X/Twitter posts calling for Mike Tomlin to save the Jets. Sunday could easily have been the last chapter in what was quickly becoming a lost season, and the narrative can change depending on next week’s road game against Drake Maye and the surging New England Patriots. All it takes is one loss to kill the good vibes and celebratory mood on social media.
David Bailey and company still have games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills ahead of their Week 14 bye, and we’ll see how Klint Kubiak’s Las Vegas Raiders respond to consecutive losses. But if you’re looking for more good news, the Jets still have two games against the winless Miami Dolphins.
Let’s be clear: we are not saying Glenn has secured his status as the Jets’ 2027 coach. Plenty of fans still want the former Pro Bowl defensive back gone, especially if they can land a quality candidate like Tomlin. The Patriots completely changed the trajectory of their franchise after reuniting with Super Bowl-winning linebacker and ex-Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel.
For now, though, the Jets are only one victory away from matching last year’s three wins. Progress is progress, even if it came against the Browns.
