The New York Jets defense is suffering from both a lack of depth in the secondary and a plague of poor tackling that is impacting every player on this roster. Darren Mougey's trade for Jarvis Brownlee could help fix these problems, but head coach Aaron Glenn didn't deploy his new addition against the Dallas Cowboys.
Without the former Tennessee Titans starter watching from the sidelines while rookie Malachi Moore got the start as the nickel cornerback, the Jets put together another humiliating defensive performance in the first half of Week 5. Once again, tackling and defending screens proved to be a big problem.
As Dallas entered the half with a 17-3 advantage, one of their scores came on a Jake Ferguson screen pass in which he walked into the end zone without any Jets laying a hand on him. Why trade for Brownlee if not to defend plays like this?
Jets give up screen pass touchdown without Jarvis Brownlee on field
Even though Brownlee has average numbers in coverage and has developed a reputation for giving up penalties at ill-advised times, the one constant that has been a theme of his both in college at Louisville and with the Titans has been his ability to tackle in open space.
Brownlee seems more likely to slide in as the slot cornerback this season, as the underperformance of Michael Carter II (in tandem with his recent injury) should open up a spot for him to contribute early. Brownlee's tackling should be an improvement over Carter instantly.
Brownlee would also help rookie Malachi Moore move to his natural safety spot, which could send Tony Adams to the bench. The Jets may like Moore's versatility, but it is clear that he is better off as a traditional safety than he is closer to the line of scrimmage at this point in his career.
The Jets trading for Brownlee, only to stick him on the bench, would be yet another irritant that is only going to inflame a fanbase that wants to get back in the win column more than anything. As Dallas has shown, getting receivers the ball in space could be a winning formula against this team.
