Will the Jets keep Rodgers?

Monday afternoon was a monumental moment in NY Jets history, as the team unveiled the brain trust that will hopefully turn this team around in head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. Their introductory press conference assured fans that things will be different this time around.

The first question on everyone's mind for both parties involved was the status of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Without giving away anything definitive, Glenn assured fans that he wouldn't be stuck in limbo for very long.

Glenn, who specifically discussed Rodgers in his opening statement before being asked about him, said he and Mougey will meet in the near future to discuss the plan with Rodgers. Glenn said that he and Rodgers have talked in the days leading up to this press conference.

The Jets are faced with two distinct options. The first one involves eating a huge cap hit up front by getting rid of Rodgers (and Davante Adams, by proxy), starting over with either a veteran bridge or younger quarterback, and rebooting in 2026. This could help Glenn put his mark on the team.

The other involves kicking the cap hit down the road for the next two years and running it back with Rodgers, who will turn 42 this season, in 2025. While not that attractive to those who want to rip the Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas Band-Aids off, Rodgers may be by far the best available quarterback the Jets can realistically start in 2025.

If the Jets, who are not picking high enough in the 2025 NFL Draft to secure the services of either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, do move off Rodgers, the options aren't particularly fruitful. Kirk Cousins will be available soon, and Justin Fields is a free agent, but top big fish Sam Darnold likely won't be coming back.

Woody Johnson has stated that he would welcome Rodgers back if Glenn and Mougey agree on that, but he is allegedly going to delegate that responsibility over to his newly hired coach and GM. At least Johnson seems to be letting his football people make this very important decision rather than meddling.

The Jets' performance in the next few years will hinge on their quarterback play, and Glenn will need to iron out a play for the position that either involves Rodgers giving it one last chance to earn some postseason glory or wash his hands of the entire affair.
