Woody is infatuated with his new hires

Woody Johnson obviously likes his new General Manager, Darren Mougey, and new Head Coach, Aaron Glenn. He is the one who hired them. But there are levels to this. And Woody Johnson's enamorment of his newest hires is at the highest level possible. He made that abundantly clear at the 2025 NFL Annual League Meeting.

He made a lot of things clear. He made it clear that he thought his "F" grading from the NFLPA this off-season was "bogus" and that it doesn't represent who he is as an owner.

The Jets also announced that they would be buying out 170 of 250 employees. In between firing a bunch of people and complaining about his reputation, though, Johnson nearly fell over himself to laud his general manager and head coach.

It must seem just a little bit comical to Jets fans. The idea that Glenn and Mougey, who have already won the fans over, would require the approval of an owner with a track record such as Woody's. While these two have climbed the career ladder, Johnson has defined incompetence for over a decade.

But, I guess it's better to have the owner in your camp than not. And Woody is certainly in their camp.

Woody Johnson wants everyone to know how good his hires were

The search to obtain Glenn and Mougey was not led by Woody, if you can believe that. It was actually led by professional football minds.

Ironically, one of those minds was once an employee of Johnson's, former general manager Mike Tannenbaum. It was also assisted by former Vikings GM Rick Spielman, who, along with Tannebaum, developed the "33rd" league (essentially a football search firm).

No doubt, the 33rd team did a good job in the end. Both Glenn and Mougey were shrewd choices. And now Woody, who desperately needed some positive PR this offseason, gets to brag about them to the media.

Johnson described Aaron Glenn in glowing terms, painting him as a natural-born leader who has been successful at every step of life.

"He's been a success his whole life. Just an amazing career. He was a very high draft [pick], performed exactly the way he was drafted and then after the draft, he's been a success. I mean, a major success.... He's got that authenticity that you can't make up. You either are or you aren't. So leadership comes that way."

However you feel about Woody, he's speaking the truth. Glenn was a very good player throughout his career and ascended all the way to the top of the coaching mountain after it. And he started his post-playing career as a scout. He truly started at the bottom, unlike a lot of former players.

Johnson also had a lot to say about Darren Mougey. He painted him as a very savvy businessman and a natural-born manager. He also appreciates how he worked his way to the position he is in, similar to Glenn.

"He's been a guy [who] started as an intern and went up all the ways to become assistant general manager on his own... I think he's got an extra gear in the way he processes information that I've been impressed with as a manager... also has a very good business sense, I think, which I think is important because business is basically logic and management."

Again, he isn't wrong. Mougey started as a scouting intern for Denver, and in just over a decade, he is running the front office of his own team. That is no easy feat, and Johnson knows that.

It seems there's a trend in what Woody likes about them — they both grew into their roles by working their way from the bottom of the totem pole up to the highest level of their profession.

They're impressive individuals, that's for sure, which is what makes it funny. Before the hires were made in the offseason, all the talk was about whether or not the Jets would even be able to attract talented individuals to join their organization. The fact that two coveted candidates agreed to sign here should mean Woody is thanking his lucky stars, not granting approval.

But, as I said before, it's better to have the owner on your side than not. And the new regime has the full blessing of the owner. Now, it's on them to prove Woody right.
