NY Jets Overreaction Theatre: Could Trevor Lawrence fall to the No. 2 pick?
By Allen Settle
Could the NY Jets witness a miracle and see Trevor Lawrence fall to them at No. 2 overall?
Fans of the NY Jets are as invested in the outcome of the College Football Playoff as an Alabama or Ohio State fan. The team, who holds the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, will assuredly be keeping their eyes on Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields.
As Fields’ stock continues to grow, he may become a realistic option to replace incumbent Jets’ starter Sam Darnold as the new franchise quarterback.
However, in the wake of Fields’ dominant victory over Trevor Lawrence and the powerhouse Clemson Tigers, now is the perfect time to overreact and ask the unthinkable question.
Is there any chance Fields surpasses Lawrence as the No. 1 overall pick? And, more importantly, could New York land the Clemson signal-caller at their current spot No. 2 spot?
Let’s dive into the madness and over-speculation.
The Tweet
Adam Schefter is the chief news breaker in the NFL world. One would be hard-pressed to find a reporter more connected with his sport than the famous ESPN analyst.
Shortly after the Buckeyes’ semifinal victory in the college playoffs, Schefter was also one of the first people to begin speculation of Fields’ rising draft stock with a tweet of him in a Jacksonville Jaguars jersey.

The caption “Could it be….?” is the same hopefully question on the minds of many Jets fans.
While the reporters’ tongue-in-cheek tweet was more hyperbole than sourced reporting, it has opened the floodgates for overreaction and speculation. However, the next piece of evidence is far more concrete.
The Urban Meyer Factor
The Jaguars, who are locked into the coveted No. 1 overall draft selection, recently elected to part ways with head coach Doug Marrone.
Ian Rapoport also reported that the team has their eyes on collegiate legend Urban Meyer as his possible replacement. National radio host Colin Cowherd also confirmed these reports.
Meyer, who won two National Championships as the coach at Ohio State, is still quite familiar with the school and its players. This potential union could be the best chance for Fields to be selected first overall.
And more importantly, the best chance for the higher-rated Lawrence to fall to Gang Green.
The Verdict for the NY Jets
At this point in the proceedings, there is virtually no chance that the Jaguars would pass on a generational prospect in Lawrence for a hot ticket in Fields. However, if Urban Meyer indeed made his NFL coaching debut in Jacksonville, the door could be cracked open.
Additionally, if Fields lights it up and topples a dynastic Alabama team in the college championship game, the odds could even increase further.
At worst, Fields “gives the Jaguars something to think about.” Jets fans can also take solace in the fact that, while Lawrence may not be in the cards, a surging Fields may be a solid option for them to consider at the No. 2 overall pick.
A few weeks ago, the Clemson star suiting up in a Jets uniform would have been unthinkable outside a blockbuster trade.
However, the Jets now have a chance to apply the famous line from the movie Dumb and Dumber — “so you’re telling me there’s a chance?”
