The NY Jets have opted to bring back a familiar face signing safety Marqui Christian.

The NY Jets expected to land some valuable safety depth this past March when they reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran Marqui Christian.

But before Christian could join the team, the potential deal fell through and he reverted back to free agency. Perhaps it was for the best as just a few months later, Christian was hit with a two-game suspension, although the reason was never reported.

Now that his suspension has been lifted, the Jets revisited the former Rams safety and have officially signed him to their active roster.

A fifth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2016 NFL Draft, Christian made the initial 53-man roster but lasted just a month as he was waived in late September.

That’s when the Rams swooped in and scooped him up providing the Midwestern State product with a home for nearly the next half-decade. Christian played the last four years with Los Angeles serving as a valuable special-teamer and third safety.

The 25-year-old saw his role increase in each of the last two seasons playing in all 32 games across that time and seeing increased time on defense in sub-packages. He even started his first career game in 2019.

Marqui Christian’s market had dried up after his deal fell through with the NY Jets.

But after his deal with the Jets fell through and his suspension kicked in, he failed to draw much interest on the open market. The Chicago Bears opted to give him a call and he signed with the team in mid-August, although he still needed to serve his suspension.

However, after two weeks had passed, the Bears opted to waive him from the active roster and sign him to their practice squad. But just a few days later, the Jets came calling and signed him with one slot remaining on their own active roster.

Christian becomes the fifth safety on the active roster alongside Marcus Maye, Bradley McDougald, rookie Ashtyn Davis, and Matthias Farley. However, Davis suffered a groin injury in Wednesday’s practice and it’s unclear how serious it is.

Moreover, the Jets have also seen quite a few injuries at the cornerback position with Arthur Maulet being placed on injured reserve and Quincy Wilson currently sidelined with a concussion.

It’s clear that the team is loading up on defensive backs.
