New York Jets finally put a nail in CJ Mosley coffin for 2019

The New York Jets have put the final nail in the 2019 coffin for linebacker CJ Mosley. Here are all the details and what it means moving forward.

This past offseason, the New York Jets made waves when they signed highly touted linebacker CJ Mosley to a massive five-year $85 million contract – the most lucrative contract given to an inside linebacker in history.

Along with free-agent signings Le’Veon Bell and Jamison Crowder, Mosley was expected to play a key role in what the organization had hoped to be a successful 2019 campaign.

This season, however, has since turned into yet another disaster for the green and white. The team currently sits at 4-8, having dealt with inconsistent play and a roster that has been depleted by injuries.

Unfortunately, Mosley has highlighted that list of injuries and the team has now officially placed him on injured reserve thus ending his 2019 season. The news was announced by head coach Adam Gase on The Michael Kay Show and was later confirmed by the team.

“It gives us a chance to get him back in the spring and get him going for the offseason program,” Gase said via ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

In the season opener, the 27-year-old quickly established himself as a leader on the defensive side of the ball, totaling four tackles, two deflected passes, an interception that was returned for a touchdown and a fumble recovery. That success was short-lived, however, as he left the game in the third quarter with a groin injury.

Once Mosley exited the game against the Buffalo Bills, the Jets completely imploded on defense, showing just how important Mosley can be. And since then, he hasn’t been able to return to form.

Mosley did return for a brief amount of time in Week 7 vs the New England Patriots, but it only resulted in him reaggravating his groin injury. Because of the continuous issues with the injury, it seemed like a formality that he would inevitably be placed on season-ending injured reserve and that finally happened on Tuesday evening.

In a corresponding roster move, the Jets claimed safety Bennett Jackson off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. He spent time on the Jets roster earlier this season.

In terms of Mosley’s future with the team, we certainly haven’t seen the last of him in the green and white.

Despite not playing a full game in his debut season for the New York Jets, the future is bright.

CJ’s injury-plagued 2019 season seems like a blip on the radar as opposed to a sign of things to come. During his five-year NFL career, he had only missed three games, prior to this horrific season with the Jets.

The Jets tried a new technique in his rehab in a desperate attempt for him to return this season, but the technique failed and the Jets decided to get him healthy and ready for a real return in 2020.

“Mosley isn’t going anywhere because his 2020 salary ($6 million) is fully guaranteed. So is $8 million of his $16 million salary in 2021,” per Rich Cimini of ESPN.

CJ became the 15th player to be placed on injured reserve by the Jets this season and the seventh starter. On top of that through the first 13 weeks of the season the Jets have lost a total of 77 games from those starters due to injury, per Eric Allen of the New York Jets.
