The New York Jets lost two starting linemen to new injuries in the team’s 34-3 rout of the Oakland Raiders. How long could Kelvin Beachum and Chuma Edoga be sidelined?
The New York Jets offensive line has been significantly improved over the team’s last few games. And while the improvements of Sam Darnold and Adam Gase have been a driving force behind the offense’s recent turnaround, so too has the offensive line.
Unfortunately, the Jets are expected to be without one of their five starters for a few weeks and could be without another one this upcoming week.
Starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum went down late in the first quarter with an apparent ankle injury and was subsequently replaced by swing tackle Brandon Shell. Beachum went into the week nursing a sprained ankle he had been battling for the majority of the season.
And when he went down, Jets fans feared the worst. Fortunately, it appears as though the injury isn’t as severe as first expected.

Gase told reporters on Monday that Beachum had suffered yet another sprain but this time to his other ankle. However, Gase also said that he expected the former Pittsburgh Steelers tackle to practice in a limited fashion on Wednesday.
It’s a testament to Beachum’s toughness that he won’t even miss a practice despite playing on two sprained ankles. And it’s imperative that the Jets have him in the lineup as he’s been incredibly effective over these last few weeks despite playing through injury.

Beachum has allowed just three QB pressures over his last four games and hasn’t allowed a single sack or hit during that same time. Having him in the lineup is huge for a Jets offense that has impressed these last few weeks.
Unfortunately, they don’t appear to be as lucky with an injury suffered by right tackle Chuma Edoga. Edoga went down with an injury just a few plays after Beachum did but he didn’t return.
Gase told reporters that Edoga has suffered an MCL sprain and is considered week-to-week with the injury.
That likely indicates that the rookie will miss at least this upcoming week against the Cincinnati Bengals and could be out even longer. Edoga had played well earlier in the season but his play had actually regressed over these last few games.
The aforementioned Shell will be called upon to start at right tackle and could very well be an improvement over the Jets’ third-round rookie. Shell is still a capable starter and is particularly impressive as a run blocker.
However, the Jets will still look to get Edoga back as soon as possible as they look to continue developing their young rookie.
Hopefully, these two injuries won’t hurt the offensive line too much as their surge in play as of late has been a huge part of the offense’s success.
And they will look to continue that success against a poor Bengals team this Sunday.
