There may be people expecting the New York Jets to remain in the NFL cellar in 2019, but star safety Jamal Adams certainly isn’t one of them.

Jets fans have become far too accustomed to seeing their team picking in the top 10 of the NFL draft every year, but Adams is making it clear his team is ready to change that perception this season.

A former top-10 pick himself, Adams has quickly turned into one of the best safeties in the entire league, showing off the complete skill set that made him a dynamic playmaker at LSU. Perhaps more importantly, his fiery leadership has brought a swagger to the entire team that breeds the confidence needed to win on a regular basis in the NFL.

While many believe the Jets are still in a rebuilding mode of sorts, Adams is clear about his high expectations for the Jets this season:

“Obviously we’re in New York. This is a win-now type of mentality and that’s how we’re taking it.”

Obviously we’re in New York. This is a win-now type of mentality and that’s how we’re taking it. We have to keep stacking the days and keep working out and I think we’ll be fine.

Like any true leader, Adams knows that building a winning culture starts with himself. To that end, he has lofty expectations for his own improvement for 2019 and beyond:

Just getting better at everything. That’s how I look at it. I don’t put a limit on myself. Obviously I want to become a better teammate, a better person off the field and even on as far as communicating and reading. And as far as my eyes, having a step before the snap. Just getting better at everything – that’s what I think I’m focused on.

The New England Patriots set a high bar for sustained success in the AFC East, but the Jets have a promising young roster that could quickly develop into playoff material. Having a presence like Adams, both on and off the field, is a huge help.
