Heading into Week 1 fantasy football, New York Jets running back Bilal Powell is a safe start against the Detroit Lions.

It’s common knowledge that the New York Jets lack offensive playmakers heading into the regular season. They have a few and one of which is none other than running back Bilal Powell. Entering his eighth season with the Jets, he will be a catalyst on offense heading into their Week 1 Monday Night Football matchup against the Detroit Lions. Should fantasy football owners consider starting him?

In the grand scheme of things, yes. Powell will not only have a huge workload against the Lions but will likely score a touchdown or two on offense thanks to everything he brings to the table. Powell doubles up as a ground and receiving target which means he can contribute fantasy football points in both areas.

The Lions defense isn’t all that great against the run and since the Jets are starting rookie quarterback Sam Darnold, it’s expected that new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates will establish and stick with the ground game. This will alleviate pressure off of Darnold and give a lot of opportunities for Powell and Isaiah Crowell to do what they do best.

While he’s not an RB1, Powell is worth starting as either an RB2 or in the FLEX position. Either way, start him as he’ll likely be a big reason why the Jets might surprise many and leave the Motor City victorious with a Week 1 win.

Powell is entering the final year of his Jets contract as he’ll likely want to total a huge season to ensure his next deal. It all starts now as he’ll easily produce another solid season with the Jets.

Fantasy football owners would be wise to start Powell this week and enjoy what could be a big game from him. Expect to see Powell ready to put on a clinic against the Lions defense.
