Wide receiver ArDarius Stewart carried high expectations when he joined the New York Jets last season. However, his lack of production along with the Jets’ deep receiving core may cause the end of his tenure with the team.

When the New York Jets drafted ArDarius Stewart in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, there were some questions about his size and ability. However, many fans were very excited thinking that the Jets had landed a wide receiver prospect similar to Jarvis Landry.

Fast forward to this offseason, and it seems as if we’ve reached the worst case scenario with Stewart. His lack of production to this point has several fans and experts thinking that Stewart’s time with the Jets could be coming to an end before the start of the 2018 regular season.

In 15 games last season, Stewart caught a measly six passes for 82 yards with no touchdowns. While he wasn’t expected to have any type of big impact, you could barely even notice that Stewart was a part of the team in many games last season which is concerning for a third-round draft pick.

A much greater issue than Stewart’s production last season, though, is the fact that we haven’t seen much improvement from him to this point in the preseason. He’s failed to get much more than some third-team reps in training camp and his production hasn’t been up to par.

Stewart didn’t have one reception in the team’s preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons and had just one catch for 17 yards last week against the Washington Redskins. If he continues failing to produce when given the opportunity, Stewart will likely find himself cut before the start of the regular season.

Expecting Stewart to be a starting-caliber player at this point in his career would be unreasonable, but expecting improvement is far from that. Stewart needs to prove that he’s at the very least a worthwhile project for Gang Green. His job depends on it.
