New York Jets beat Cleveland Browns: Week 5 Special Teams grades
By Michael Pallas
The New York Jets had a tough, hard-fought victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, 17-14.
It’s not every day that history is made. Additionally, it’s not every day that history is made by a special teams unit, but history was made at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday. New York Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro joined the record books twice in one day. He set the franchise record for longest field goal kicked, and he became the NFL’s sixth kicker since the NFL-AFL merger to have multiple field goals of 57 yards or longer in his career. With his 57-yard field goal, he’s inching closer becoming the 12th most accurate field goal kicker of all-time.
Punter Lachlan Edwards is continuing to grow as a punter. He averaged 51.3 yards per punt. However, his inside the 20 percentage was only 16.7 percent (1/6), the net average was 43.3 and he had his first touchback of the season. So, he still needs some work, but he’s improving from last season.
Catanzaro had three kickoffs, and all of them were touchbacks. That brings his season total to 65.7%, 11th in the NFL.

The Jets didn’t really have much to do in the way of the return game. Most of the game the Browns were either turning the ball over or missing field goals, but they did alright on their four returns they had in total. The Jets also forced two missed field goals, which is good.
There’s nothing bad to say about the performance of the Jets special teams unit, and that’s a good thing. They had their one spectacular moment in the sun, and it probably won’t get recognized, but it was a Bill Belichick special for this unit, just do your job, and we can’t really ask for much more out of them.

If they did poorly, you’d hear about it, so getting their names out there when they do some good things is a good thing as well.
