Veteran quarterback Josh McCown has played well in his first four starts with the New York Jets. Could this give the young quarterbacks the grooming time they need?
During the offseason, the New York Jets got rid of most of their veteran players, implying that they really wanted to focus on building up their young talent. However, they seemed to pour that plan down the drain when they picked up 38-year-old quarterback Josh McCown. This didn’t make too much sense, and it irritated a lot of fans.
But, after four weeks into the regular season, it’s starting to look like that move may not have been such a bad move after all. McCown has done really well through four weeks, and the team currently holds a 2-2 record with him under center.
If he keeps this up, then the younger guys like Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg can focus more on developing their skills without having to worry about being thrown into the starting role midseason.

Both of these guys can work hard competing against each other with their reps in practice, and once McCown retires, they can have a quality position competition because they will both be 100 percent ready for a starting job.
This would also put less pressure on the Jets to go out and find another young guy straight out of college. Instead, they will be able to work with what they have, while building a solid team around one of them.

Overall, the McCown signing is proving to be an effective move for the team. He’s showing that he’s good enough to help the team win in the present, while also being a great mentor, which might help the team keep up their winning ways in the future. Here’s to hoping he can keep this team in the win column for 12 more weeks.
