The New York Jets still have one big question mark when it comes to their quarterback situation. Heading into the 2017 NFL Draft, Patrick Mahomes could be the answer they’re looking for in the future.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech could be a real steal in the 2017 NFL Draft. The big question, however, for the New York Jets, comes down to if he has what it takes to be a solid option in the future? The Jets still don’t have an established franchise quarterback as it’s best they keep drafting more until one is eventually revealed.

The Jets have had a frustrating time in finding a true starting quarterback. That’s why it makes sense for them to consider taking a chance with Mahomes. At 6’2″ and weighing in at 230 pounds, he kind of looks like Ben Roethlisberger in size with the throwing abilities of Matthew Stafford. Mahomes has a very strong arm when he is in the pocket or on the run.

Throughout his career, at Texas Tech, his production increased each year. In an article written by David Kenyon of The Bleacher Report, here is what he had to say about Mahomes:

More from The Jet Press

“When he gets out of his first read, he moves all over the place and a receiver will make a play. He’s a great quarterback.”

If the Jets took a chance on Mahomes, they could have another option worth developing. There is no guarantee that either Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg are the answer. If both end up as busts, it’s back to the drawing board with the Jets.

But having Mahomes in the mix would give them another option just in case both of their previously drafted quarterbacks don’t work out. With the young receivers the Jets have and Mahomes arm, they are building the pieces now for a bright future.

If the Jets launch a spread type of offense which would be an area Mahomes excels in, he could be a difference maker for years to come. He won’t be ready to start anytime soon but if the Jets draft him and coach him up, he could take the city that never sleeps by storm.
