On the official Twitter account of The Jet Press, fans of the New York Jets were asked if they liked the free agent signing of quarterback Josh McCown.

Earlier this week, we here at The Jet Press wanted to ask fans of the New York Jets on our Twitter account if they liked the free agent signing of quarterback Josh McCown. When he agreed to terms on a one-year/$6M deal with the Jets, it got mixed reaction from the football world.

On one hand, it looked like a desperate signing by a team heading into a rebuilding year. The Jets aren’t 100 percent confident in either Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg to be a dominant starter next season, hence why they brought in McCown as an insurance policy.

On the other hand, it also looked like a smart signing since there is a possibility McCown won’t play a single snap next season and simply train, develop, and mentor both young quarterbacks to develop them further.  For what he was paid on a short-term deal, it’s a strategic move that would mean either Petty or Hackenberg will be under center next season.

Check out the final results of the Twitter poll we conducted to see what the majority voted:

Needless to say, fans of the Jets aren’t happy with McCown. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why but for the most part, it looks like fans remember that this is the same quarterback that has lost a plethora of football games the past few years.

It’s important to remember that at the end of the day, he’s just a veteran backup that brings experience to the table. The kind of starting experience that Petty and Hackenberg don’t really have which will help them grow in the grand scheme of things.

Next: Acquisition of Josh McCown makes perfect sense for a rebuild

Overall, no matter what transpires come next season, the Jets didn’t exactly break the bank to acquire McCown and at least now have someone that will mold their young quarterbacks of the future. He’s only with the Jets for one year and if he’s able to get either Petty or Hackenberg even slightly better, it’s going to be a good investment.
