Jets vs Cardinals: Top 5 takeaways from Week 6 matchup

The New York Jets once again showed no urgency in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals as the season continues to look like it’ll be a disaster.

For the third consecutive week, the New York Jets took another huge step back in Week 6 as they lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 28-3. Once again, from the start of the game, the Jets were outplayed on both sides of the football.

The Jets offense once again struggled in providing points and just held onto the football less than the Cardinals. With the offense struggling, the Jets defense was on the field much longer than what they would have liked.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 1-5 and head home for next Sunday’s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. If they want to try to make something out of this season then they must win this game.

The coaches, players, and the front office need to look at themselves and realize they are to blame for this embarrassing start. They need to prepare much better and prove they can at least put up a respectable performance on the football field.

5. Offensive play calling is once again a huge problem

Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey really needs to change his play calling because it has not worked at all this season. He relies too much on the same plays that haven’t worked during the games at all this season.

In the past, Jets coaches have been involved in calling certain plays and they may need head coach Todd Bowles to put his two cents in. Gailey really needs to just keep it basic and just go with plays that have been successful.

As a fan, you wonder what his mindset is in some of the plays that are called because they all looked lost on the field. The running game along with the passing game hasn’t been working as maybe they lost trust in Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The offense beats themselves on many drives with the penalties they get and make it harder for the drive to continue.  The Jets were penalized in one drive that took them from getting closer in the game to punting the football. Again the offense had the football less than the Cardinals as they had it 12 minutes and 44 seconds less.

4. Defensive line puts very little pressure on Cardinals

Monday’s game was very difficult in watching the defensive line of the Jets as they were unable to provide little pressure. Quarterback Carson Palmer had a lot of time in sitting in the pocket while he dissected the Jets secondary.

Palmer threw for 225 yards against the Jets secondary. The Cardinals were 3 for 3 in the red zone which is critical for them to protect and the Jets didn’t do that at all.

The front four was supposed to be the best in the NFL for how athletic they are and they look more like the worst in the league. They didn’t sack the quarterback once which is a frustrating part of the game you wish your team did.

The offense of the Cardinals averaged a total of 396 yards in total offense which tells you something isn’t going right for the Jets. Too many penalties make you think this team isn’t disciplined and are not playing for one another.

The Jets secondary once again for the sixth week in a row had a horrendous performance which is getting very frustrating to watch. Too many penalties and missed coverages that blew up and allowed the Cardinals to get open easily.

The Cardinals had 225 yards in passing which  is unacceptable to have let up against your team as an organization. When they needed to make critical third down stops, the Jets secondary couldn’t make them at all. It was either blown coverages or they received a penalty and let the drive continue.

The Jets need to try to come up with a plan because this is getting out of hand for this team to continue giving up big plays.

2. Offense shows no fire and urgency once again

Every drive, the Jets offense looked very sluggish and wasn’t able to produce points. It goes to show that once again, without Eric Decker who is out for the season with a shoulder and hip injury, it is going to be a problem for the rest of the year.

In Week 6, the offense went 0 for 2 in the red zone when they needed to score to try to make the game competitive. Fitzpatrick’s leadership was  a no-show and players were literally yelling at one another.

The running game was a no-show which is a huge problem as it only produced 33 total yards. It is important to get everyone involved and not one-dimensional. They showed no hustle and no urgency to keep the drives going.

They showed no heart on the field and you wonder if they just don’t care anymore since they are under .500. They were supposed to be very productive and it hasn’t shown at all. It is embarrassing  to watch the same results over and over as something has to be done before it gets any worse.

1. Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to be benched

This was another horrific performance by Fitzpatrick who again, threw another interception. He has totaled 11 interceptions so far this season. He went 16 for 31 for a total of 174 yards in passing with a quarterback rating of 55.0.

Fitzpatrick drew his last straw in trying to get this team to trust him. He continued to force throws into double coverage and didn’t use his check downs.

He needs to take action for his performances and let someone else take over. It’s clear that he just isn’t the answer the Jets need as an effective starter as he needs to consider taking a week or so off to get his head back into the swing of things.

If they were to put another quarterback in then I would say put in Geno Smith and if that doesn’t work go with Bryce Petty. I wouldn’t let Fitzpatrick continue to play because of the lack of leadership and the sole fact that he’s easily the worst quarterback in the NFL.
