The New York Jets heading into the 2016 NFL Draft needed quality depth at cornerback. Make no mistake about it, Juston Burris will make an impact this upcoming season once his number is called.

At 6’1″ and weighing 212 pounds, Burris has the opportunity to make an immediate impact with the Jets this upcoming season. The departure of veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie opens the door for a new player to step up and make a name for himself. Now obviously Darrelle Revis is slotted in as No. 1 and Buster Skrine will most likely emerge as No. 2 so this gives a chance to Burris, Marcus Williams and Dexter McDougle to compete in filling out the rest of the depth chart.

Given the attributes that Justin Burris brings to the table, he has all the makings to become a star in the NFL. At North Carolina State, Burris is used to playing a lot of man coverage as he did mostly throughout his college career. Given his 2016 NFL Combine stats and looking through his college stats as well, he seems to have the skill-set to be an effective weapon for the Jets.

During his time playing for the Wolfpack, he allowed 34% of passes thrown his way to be completed while allowing just one touchdown on 44 attempts his senior year. He has a very long reach and that gives him an edge over the defensive backs he will be competing against on the team.

Head coach Todd Bowles stated that Burris has the versatility to play in the slot, but they see him as an outside press cover corner. The Jets like his style of play and think he can fit perfectly with how they want their corners to play. To be able to have a rookie in Burris to be on the same roster as a veteran like Revis is truly an advantage that you cannot get with any other team.

Burris has the opportunity to learn from one of the best. If he can pick up something here and there from Revis that can help tweak his game and give him a competitive edge, then who knows how good this kid can be.

Overall, the Jets had a great draft and Burris could very well be one of those sleepers that emerges as a great player. Every draft has those late round players that become superstars and in this case, Burris has all the tools to become the next one. The Jets may have a potential star on their hands and hopefully they recognize it sooner than later to give him the playing time that he will earn.
