New York Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick discusses International Series

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s not easy for the New York Jets to bounce back from their stunning Week 3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles but they will do their best to prove they’re still contenders this season. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, despite having a few interceptions not really be his fault, will look to minimize his errors and put the Jets back on top with what he brings to the table.

Thanks to the Media Relations Department of the Jets, they sent us here at The Jet Press a full transcript of what Fitzpatrick had to say about the upcoming International Series, what it’ll be like to face Ndamukong Suh and much more. Enjoy!

On what is the biggest challenge of having an international game…

I think we’ll see as it comes, because we’ve got to figure out the sleep schedules and how everybody feels and all that. The good thing is both teams are dealing with the same stuff and the same challenges and problems.

So, we really just have to focus in while we’re here with practice today and meetings and tomorrow as well, before we get on the plane. Then be productive over there, but it’s going to be a huge mental week for us, just making sure that we know exactly what we’re doing on offense, what we’re trying to get accomplished and the different things they can throw at us on defense.

On how big of a challenge does Miami DT Ndamukong Suh pose…

He’s a great player, obviously he signed for all that money for a reason. He’s supremely talented, they’ve got a few of them on their defense, you have to know where they are on every play and really pay a lot of attention to it. It’s him, but there’s a lot of other guys up front. They don’t have a ton of sacks, but they’re going to come because they have a lot of talent and (they are) talented on the backend as well.

On if he needs to know where each defender is during pre-snap…

I think moreso for the guys up front, just having a feel for where everybody is and their different strengths and weaknesses, the inside guys and the outside guys.

On if he has ever played against Suh…

Probably, I don’t really remember all that.

On if he’s ever had any interaction with Suh on the field…

Yeah, I don’t really remember if I did.

On if he’s excited to see what the fans will be like in London…

Yeah, I think there’s a little bit of uncertainty in the locker room in terms of how it’s going to be, the noise level and all that. There’s some guys, coaches, that have been over there that we’ve talked to a little bit about some of that stuff. But yeah I think that will be interesting to see how it plays out on Sunday.

On Devin Smith and not connecting with him during the Eagles game…

I think Devin’s going to be a really good player and we just haven’t had a ton of work together. We just have to continue to work that stuff in practice and hopefully it comes in the games. But, he’s a guy that’s got a lot of talent. What he did in college was phenomenal and now we’re in the NFL and we have to keep working and doing all those little things right, where you can’t just rely on your talent, mentally you’ve got to be able to beat the guy as well. So, we’re working on all those things and I’ll continue to throw to him.

On if he believes Smith needs to fight for the ball a little bit more…

Devin’s a guy that’s shown, in college again, that he can make those plays and we’re just going to keep giving him his opportunities.

On what it would mean to have Chris Ivory and Eric Decker back for the London game…

You always want to go out there with who you view as your best 11 and those are two guys that we rely on a lot. That being said, everybody deals with injuries. Especially with the wide receivers, I think we have a very deep group there and we’ve got some play makers. We’ll see what happens with both of them, but obviously we want everybody on board.

On the Dolphins only having one sack this season…

I think it’s a little misleading. I mean, historically look at the guys that they have up front and the way they performed. They create some matchup problems for you. We don’t look at that, I’m not sitting here looking at that saying, ‘Boy, I’m going to be able to sit back there all day and throw.’ They’ve got a lot of talented guys up front that can rush the passer.
