New York Jets: Chris Ivory discusses solid performance
Running back Chris Ivory had quite the game with the New York Jets as they routed the Cleveland Browns 31-10. Ivory used his incredible skill-set to beat defenders off the edge and broke tackles like there was no tomorrow. His power running attack helped establish the run early and often as it helped open up everything else on offense.
Ivory led the Jets in rushing for the game as he totaled 91 rushing yards on 20 carries for 2 touchdowns. What did Ivory actually think of his solid performance? Take a look at his direct quotes directly from his conversations with reporters direct from the Media Relations Department of the Jets. Enjoy!

On how it feels to get the win…
It’s good. It’s always good to start off with a win. 1-0 within the first quarter, so it was great.
On how it felt to score…
It was good, just to get a score and just to take the lead.
On Coach Bowles getting the win as a first-year head coach…
I mean it’s always good to start off with a win, so that’s all I can really say about that. For a first-year head coach I think that’s good for him.
On if this feels like a new beginning for the team…
Yeah, new team, new organization, new group of guys as far as coaches and just running a new system.
On how the chemistry feels this year compared to last year…
It feels good. You know, everybody has their different philosophies as far as being a head coach and how they want to run their organization or their team, but it feels great. We just come in every day ready to work.
On if today was an example of how his offseason training helped prepare him for the regular season…
Yes, it’s definitely paying off. Early on it was a little tough to run, so that’s what we had to do, I had to try to get around the edge on a few. Sometimes it was difficult, but (I) made it happen on a couple plays.
On Brandon Marshall’s strip…
That was clutch right there. That was big time, I think that changed the momentum of the game. A big strip and right after that we come back and score, but then we had the penalty and we come back and score again, so it was definitely a momentum shift.
On Lorenzo Mauldin’s injury…
Man, I don’t really know what happened with him. When I was running out on the field I could see he was getting up, I just saw him get weak and he fell again and after that it just looked like his eyes rolled into the back of his head. After that, I’m not sure what else happened, he was just there, eyes closed.
On if he has ever seen an injury like that…
No. you know sometimes guys take big crackback hits, they don’t see the guys, blindside hit. So I don’t know if he took a blindside hit or what, but he didn’t look to be doing so good at that time. Hopefully everything is good, I believe it will be, but I guess we’ll see.
On creating contact as a running back…
When you’re going up the middle in a goal line situation that’s what you have to be. Down in the goal line it’s about getting vertical, you don’t want to run sideways too often, but sometimes you may take it outside, most of the time you want to just get vertical.

On his level of confidence…
(My) Confidence is good right now. You always have to go in with confidence and just try to make positive plays. As a team you have to have that confidence as well.
On how it feels to get praise from the coaching staff and teammates…
It makes me feel good. It just lets me know that they’re seeing the work that I’m putting in. I don’t really think I’ve changed too much, but I did have one of my better camps this year. Those guys are my peers and they’re all around so they see what I’m capable of and what I do every day so that’s probably why you hear that.
On if he feels like he is ready to be the feature running back for the team…
I feel like I’ve always been doing that. Since I’ve been here with the Jets, splitting carries is not a problem with me. I feel like it saves our bodies and (if) we have two, three good backs in the backfield, why not use everybody?
On if he feels like today was a preview of what kind of year he can have…
Yes. For one, I like the scheme. We come in and work hard every day and we just practice as if it’s a game, we take those reps as game reps. I’m just confident. If you’re not confident in yourself, who else will be? You have to be, that’s the only way I think you prosper and progress in this game.
On if he feels like he has an opportunity to have a breakout season…
Yeah, I think the opportunity is there. It’s just about me making the plays and being healthy.
On how Marshall’s strip play changed the offense…
It just changes the momentum. It brings the momentum on our side.
On if seeing his teammates bring extra effort into play riles him up…
For one, if you’re not bringing effort in this game, you don’t need to be playing. You probably shouldn’t be out on the field. I think it’s always going to be extra effort. It should be every play. But some guys may not bring it every play, but that’s what we’re looking for.
On why the extra effort is always part of his game…
Well, it’s just part of my game. I don’t know, it’s something that’s within me.
On if this is the year that he will have an opportunity for more production…
I definitely think there’s more opportunity but yeah right now, today was I think 20? What they want to do right now is run first, that’s what we’re doing, we’ll run first. Then we come to the pass and then we got play action. So I think we did good, yeah. But it’s not just going to be myself alone, it’s going to take those guys up front. I think they’ve been doing a great job. If we continue to do a good job up front, I think that can happen.
On if he noticed the lanes getting bigger…
Not so much, at times maybe. But some of that comes with, like I said, the guys up front. Just me pressing my landmark and getting those guys to flow. At times the guys, or their defense, had the box pretty stacked. But once we started throwing the ball, it opened up a little bit.

On what Marshall brings to the offense…
A threat outside. Once we get to passing the ball with threats outside, it leaves the defense with not knowing what to do. You have to worry about both run and pass.
On why he continues to have good opening games…
I don’t know, man. I don’t know. It’s just something that happens. Can’t explain that.
On if having an expanded role excites him…
It doesn’t excite me. When I first came in here, I felt like I was getting a lot of carries. But at times, we didn’t do so well with that. We could run the ball pretty good against a team and then we’d just stop.
On if the offense has improved this season…
It just all depends on the team we play. Every team is different. It just depends on the game plan that the coaches have going in. So every game may not be 20 carries. I might have some games where I have 10, 15 carries, and that’s fine with me. As long as we’re winning. You just got to know your opponent. There’s just some guys you can’t run the ball against and some teams.
