New York Jets: Top Jersey Numbers in Team History, Part Three

Alan Faneca was an anchor on a Jets’ offensive line that opened holes for the number one ranked running game in the NFL.

Good afternoon everybody. Today, we bring you part three of our series of the top jersey numbers in New York Jets history. Which numbers have had the most memorable players wearing them? We are going back through the annals of time to share just that with you.

Now we continue with part three:

JERSEY NUMBER: 66

MEMORABLE PLAYERS TO WEAR: Alan Faneca, Randy Rasmussen

Alan Faneca was not a member of the Jets for very long, but he was very good during his time here. At left guard, he became the perfect mentor to play along side D’Brickashaw Ferguson, and it culminated in 2009, when the Jets led the NFL in rushing, and the Jets went to the AFC title game.

Randy Rasmussen wore the number 66 as well, and makes the list due to his longevity. He broke into the league in 1967 and started in Super Bowl III, and was with the Jets through 1981, and was a starter for his entire career.

JERSEY NUMBER: 65

MEMORABLE PLAYERS TO WEAR: Brandon Moore, Joe Fields

We are all familiar with Brandon Moore, aren’t we? He was an undrafted free agent, converted to guard after coming up as a defensive player, and was a starter at right guard for his entire career. Whether or not he is signed by another team or ends up retiring, we will always remember Brandon for his consistency.

Remember Joe Fields? He played 12 years at center for the New York Jets, from 1975-1987. He was as solid as a rock at center, with two Pro Bowl appearances. He was named an All-Pro three times. He was terrific for over a decade, and cements the need for #65 on this list.

JERSEY NUMBER: 60

MEMORABLE PLAYERS TO WEAR: D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Dan Alexander

D’Brickashaw will be one we remember for a long time. Drafted in the first round in 2006, he has anchored the Jets’ quarterback’s blind side ever since. No reason to go over his particulars, we know them.

Dan Alexander wore the green and white from 1977-1989, playing 192 games in New Jersey.

JERSEY NUMBER: 57

MEMORABLE PLAYERS TO WEAR: Bart Scott, Mo Lewis

I “Can’t wait” to talk about the number 57. For better or for worse, we will always remember Bart Scott. He came over as the first acquisition by Rex Ryan when he took over in 2009, and became his on-field coach. He slowed through the years but we will always remember the “Can’t Wait” speech.

Most of us are familiar with Mo Lewis as well. Mo was a linebacker in New Jersey from 1991-2003, recording 232 tackles, 52.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 14 INTs during that time. Unfortunately, he will be remembered just as much for the hit on Drew Bledsoe that jump started the “story of a man named Brady”. But we all know he was a great linebacker.
