2013 NFL Mock Draft: The New York Jets Select……..

The Weekly Fansided 2013 NFL Mock Draft is out once again and the guys over at Fansided has once again change their selection for the Jets and we’ll analyze the pick as usual with some brief in depth analysis like always.  We thank the guys over at Fansided for taking the time to hit us with a weekly mock draft and getting the jump on the fray that is the NFL Draft…. so here we go.

This week the guys has the Jets taking 6’5  240 pound LSU DE Barkevious Mingo with the 9th overall pick.  I’m not that particually big on Mingo but considering who is on the board in this mock, I think the Jets would be making the right call with this selection without a doubt.  The Jets will be extremely thin at the OLB position after the season as Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas are certainly gone leaving the Jets grasing at air at the OLB position.  Mingo would certainly give the Jets speed and youth at the position for sure and considering the Jets have two studs on the d-line in Quinton Coples and Muhammed Wilkerson, I’d say their pass rushing woes can be fixed almost immediately by adding someone like Mingo to the defense.

LSU’s DE Barkevious Mingo would add the speed off the edges the Jets need on their defense.

Mingo’s Report –

Mingo is a super freak which helps him to produce at a high level despite his thin frame. He  gets off the snap quickly with his very good foot quickness and has an elite burst to close rather quickly on the quarterback.  He is very good at changing directions on the fly when charging up field and certainly has the flexibility to dip his hips and torso to get underneath the offensive tackle while keeping his balance. His tall frame and long arms helps him to bat down or tip passes at the line of scrimmage, something the Jets didnt do enough of this past season.   His playing strength is completely dependent on his playing with leverage and aggressiveness.  He does tend to struggle shedding in-line blocks.  He certainly isnt a power rusher as he lacks the bulk but maximizes his other attributes which overshadows his lack of bulk and strength.  Mingo wont beat an OT with power right away but he’ll beat them with his speed and quickness and his long arms will tend to give him an advantage when rushing on the edge as tackles may struggle to get a legal grip on his with his arms in front of him.

Mingo would be scary coming from the wide 9 position in a four down lineman front on obvious passing downs with his tremendous speed, burst, flexibility, and anticipation.  Mingo offers that speed rusher that NFL teams covet now a days. Overall, Mingo will upgrade a teams’ speed along the defensive line and edges with his ability to chase plays down from sideline to sideline. He may never be more than a pass rushing specialist until he adds more bulk and playing strength, something that will certainly come with growth and maturity but he’ll be a consistent and effective  pass rushing outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, but needs some coaching on dropping into coverage.

Final Word:

I like the pick and think Mingo would certainly add the speed on the edges that the Jets have been coveting for some time now.  I think the Jets certainly must upgrade their pass rush being in the same division as one Tom Brady and I think Mingo can compliemnt Coples and Wilkerson exceptionally.
