This morning, we continue our five part series on training camp stories that we will be watching. These are stories that aren’t related to Tim Tebow, of course, as we will ALL be watching that situation.

Here is storyline number 2:
WHO WILL EMERGE AS NUMBER 2 WIDE RECEIVER ALONGSIDE SANTONIO HOLMES?
This is one of the more interesting storylines as the Jets head off to Cortland. The Jets clearly have their number 1 receiver, Santonio Holmes. Whether or not he will be back to his 2010 self, that is for a different post entirely.
But who will emerge as the number 2? Behind Holmes, there really isn’t a lot of proven talent. The position is deep as we head into training camp, but the depth chart is far from set.
More on the next page…
Stephen Hill is the guy who the Jets want to fit the bill. He was limited during OTAs and minicamp with a hamstring problem, but he has a lot of skills. At 6’4″ 215 pounds, he is the size you are looking for in a wide receiver. Running a 4.36 40 yard dash, he can fly as well. With limited receptions in college, he did average over 20 yards per catch, but his route experience is limited. The Jets may want him to be the number 2, but there is no guarantee that he will fit the bill right away.
Another guy with that opportunity is Chaz Schilens. He is the same height as Hill, and made a very strong showing at mini camp. He has great hands, and looks like an able bodied target for Mark Sanchez. If he can stay on the field, which Chaz has a history of problems with, he may just be the guy.
Jeremy Kerleycame on strong at the end of 2011, but the Jets really see him in the slot, as a third down type of wide receiver.
Don’t count out a sleeper possibility as well, DaMarcus Ganaway. This young man had quite the showing at OTAs and minicamp. If the other guys don’t watch out, this guy could just make his way up the depth chart for an immediate 2012 impact as well.
Other guys coming into camp fighting for time include Jordan White, Patrick Turner, and Scotty McKnight. These guys, as well as others coming into camp, aren’t expected to make their way quite as high on the depth chart, but you never know. All the guys are unproven, so everyone will have a shot.
Number 2 wide receiver, the second battle to watch in training camp, not involving a left handed quarterback.
