NY Jets: Team needs to stay far away from Johnny Manziel

The NY Jets definitely have some quarterback issues to address after this season is over, but no matter the situation, they need to stay away from Johnny Manziel.

Trust me when I say, I understand the situation the Jets are in when it comes to quarterback, especially for the future. I’m a huge fan of Ryan Fitzpatrick but realize he’s more of a short-term answer. I think the Jets will bring him back next season to continue having his veteran presence on the team as well as continuing being a mentor for quarterback Bryce Petty.

Speaking of Petty, he could indeed turn into the franchise quarterback the Jets have so desperately been looking for but I’m quite the realist in the grand scheme of things. I know he’s at least another year or two away from putting all his studying and preparing to good use as a potential future starting quarterback. Still, he probably won’t be anything big come next season as he’s still pretty raw and will probably need much more work.

Now to the elephant in the room involving Geno Smith. I’ve always spoke my mind about him and quite frankly, I don’t see him either as a long-term option or even on the roster come next season. I think the new leadership regime will assess everything and realize it’s probably best to part ways. From the summer incident, terrible play on the field and his lack of leadership skills, I think Smith is done in New York.

Many fans are huge on the potential that Manziel brings to the table but to be honest, I think he’s a decent quarterback that is on the wrong team at this point in time with the Cleveland Browns. He’ll find a new home soon but I also think he’s going to cause more distractions and disappointment due to his ability to make all the wrong decisions with his off-the-field antics.

I think the Jets should stick with Fitzpatrick, Petty, get rid of Smith and draft another quarterback. Looking at potential free agent quarterbacks in 2016, only really Brock Osweiler would be someone that would make sense for the Jets but I highly doubt the Denver Broncos would part ways with him.

Overall, Manziel would bring a whole lot of grief and no matter how good he is on the football field, I think the Jets should completely stay far away from him. It might be tempting to trade for him or pick him up if he’s released by the Browns since I think they’ve had enough of him too but it would be a disaster if he came to the Jets. The Jets are a team trying to rebuild their identity by being a smart team with minimal distractions. It’s best to stay away from one that would bring much more bad than good.
