The NY Jets have a new leading man as late Thursday night the team announced that Robert Saleh would take over as their next head coach.

Saleh comes in from the San Francisco 49ers organization where he served as the defensive coordinator from 2017 through the end of the 2020 season.

After the disaster that was the Adam Gase era, the team needed to find the right guy — and they did. The Jets needed a leader, someone who could come in from day one and change the losing culture into a winning one.

Joe Douglas led the search and looked into any candidate worth considering. Saleh stood out amongst them all. He was exactly what the Jets wanted, impressing Douglas and the search committee from the start.

There were many things that the Jets were looking for in their next head coach and Saleh checked all the boxes. A leader, culture builder, brilliant coach in terms of X’s and O’s, and someone who brings energy to the team.

Something that has been lacking on the Jets sideline as of late.

You can just tell that Saleh is a good leader by listening to him talk, listening to what players say about him, and watching him on the sideline. He is so passionate about what he does and it shows.

The outpour of support on Twitter from players is outstanding. Current Jets including Quinnen Williams, Mekhi Becton, Ty Johnson, and John Franklin-Myers all took to Twitter to express excitement, along with Richard Sherman and Joe Staley, players who have played under Saleh in the past.

The NY Jets seem to have got it right with Robert Saleh

Everything that has been said and everything that Saleh has done points to the fact that he is a great locker room leader that can turn this franchise around. The fact that he shot up Douglas’ list of candidates just based on their meetings shows that he has what it takes.

In terms of building a culture, he obviously has the vision to bring this team into the future. He will be bringing in talented coaches that will complement his strengths and cover up the holes in his coaching style.

Saleh has said publicly that no coach can give players everything they need. That is the first step in building a great culture. Being able to admit that there are going to be things that you can’t do.

This is why Saleh is going to be a great coach. He knows what he’s good at and what he needs help with.

Moving to the actual schemes you will see the Jets running, Saleh is expected to bring in a 4-3 defense that plays a lot of zone coverage. He has had a ton of success as a defensive coordinator running a primarily Cover 3 scheme.

The 49ers’ defense, led by Saleh, has been dominant over the last two seasons. Last year as the driving force to the 49ers playoff run, and this year as the unit that kept the team afloat despite a ton of injuries.

Finally, for the energy, Saleh has a ton of this and plenty to spare. If you have watched the 49ers’ defense over the last four years you would see a guy who brings more fire, passion, and energy to the sideline than any other coach.

This is exactly what this team needed. There hasn’t been energy on the Gang Green sideline since Rex Ryan left. The Jets wanted a coach that looked like he actually wanted to be there and was interested in coaching the entire team, not just the offense.

When you take all four of those factors into account you find Robert Saleh. The new head coach of the NY Jets. The hire the Jets finally got right.
